    Black is engine oil. Probably from the spin-on oil filter. It did it a few times on my TD5. The gasket on the filter seems to want to leak for some reason. I just put a new filter on and it was good for 20,000 or 30,000 km's. Pink? Coolant or transmission fluid. If it dries up, it's coolant. Why does LR use pink coolant and everyone else uses green? Look for a wet radiator hose or similar. If it doesn't dry up on the concrete, it's transmission fluid. Could be a warning that the transmission cooler hose is about to let go.

    Put a little water on the "wet patch" (no comments please, from the peanut gallery!) and if it disolves it will be coolant. If it shimers, it's oil.

    The location of the drip on the floor is a good hint of where to start looking.

    It's black so I will take it to one of the local specialists to check it out as well as the injector loom for possible oil heading towards the ECU.

    Its only small drips but they presumably will only stop when I run out of oil

    Well the source of the "leak' has been identified and now fixed.

    It was caused by the fuel connecor block which was weeping diesel so all in all a relatively easy and inexpensive fix.

    No sign of any other leaks on either the engine block nor the loom into the ECU area.

    I went to to Wilf Chambers in Osborne Park and would be quite prepared to go back to him for future repairs and servicing.

    Cost wise $274 for parts plus 1.5hours labour @$70 before the 10% donation to the budget surplus.

    Wilf advised the job took longer than normal because a couple of the bolts were really in tight so they were difficult to remove, he also sourced the part from the Eastern States because it was cheaper than getting it in WA.

    I feel happy with the level of service and prices but I haven't got a clue how much the parts are worth but there seemed to be a fair amount of engineering involved in the component I looked at and it was in an original Land Rover box.

    So does this qualify as a "leak" and again confirm that all rovers are leakers !!!!!!!!!!

    I don't think so but others on other boards may view it differently.

    Why does LR use pink coolant and everyone else uses green?
    because the coolant used from late '98 on is an OAT (organic [carboxylate] acid technology) long life (up to 5 years) ethylene glycol based coolant. It generally keeps the internals much cleaner than standard type coolants, and as it uses an organic acid for corrosion control instead of something like silicates, nitrates, borates, amines, etc. it only works where needed and so doesn't coat all the internal parts of the cooling system and so has a heat transfer ability roughly halfway between conventional coolants and pure water.

    It's actually bright orange. If it was green, people would mix it with standard type ethylene glycol coolants negating it's benefit.
