Agree January 26 is the wrong date because it is the day Governor Phillip claimed British control over New South Wales, not Australia, which didn't exist for more than a century. So historically, January 26 IS Invasion Day and a cause of continuing division.
Also agree January 1 is Federation Day when Australia came into being so that should be Australia Day. So what if January 1 is already a holiday? That's no reason not to name it Australia Day.

SA used to have an 'Empire Day' but that got changed by who knows who [bighmmm] & we used to have an 'Arbour Day' (now Earth Day) when we kids would plant trees in the school precinct & local area. I think if you look at the list of past winners , you could say that about quite a few, cricket captains, swimmers , movie stars etc, really at least half could be said is due to crowd favourites rather than the commitment to improving day to day life of others. You're right you know & hats off to them. It is an Australian Award & doesn't say anything about where it is applicable IMHO.
