Well you are correct that China is one of the major polluters in the world but they are also one one of the top countries switching to green energy but are starting from a very low base - they will improve with time.

Yes we contribute only about 1% but that is no reason for us not to do our bit as one of the highest polluters per capita and yes like Chine we are also doing our bit by moving over to renewable energy.

I agree we are meeting our base targets but it comes down to the ethics of relying on credits rather than meeting revised targets. By doing this we are being ridiculed by others for our double standards, and our efforts to have China taken out of the developing economy category and moved to the developed economy category and so having tighter restrictions placed on them is undermined by our own double standards.

As a country we need to do our bit and try to influence the other big polluters that they need to do the same.

Putting heads in the sand like an ostrich and hoping the problem goes away helps no one and certainly not the planet.

Do you REALY think that what we do in Australia to keep our miniscule carbon footprint down will have any REAL affect on what China does to cut its emissions??
What you are suggesting is that we become carbon neutral so that the major contributors like China, India, USA and others will follow our lead, We will Definately get ridiculed for assuming that and expecting others to follow because we say so.[bigwhistle]

Maybe you could advise him that you are demanding the Australian Government do more to reduce the 1% of CO2 that we contribute even though Australia is meeting all its Paris and Kyoto targets.

Its not a us V them issue on China. Note they are building more carbon free Nuclear power and more than we ever will.

Re our ability to deal with climate change being a relatively minuscule emitter (if you excluded exports of coal and gas )

As a really minuscule Nation we contributed a lot of troops to WW1 and WW2 and punched well above our minuscule Nation status. Our efforts are noted. Happily see the National Hydrogen strategy as a way we can all benefit.

Fully agree name calling and getting grumpy helps nothing.

Maybe not China directly but if we can convince the members of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change that China should not be considered an emerging economy with its concessions and be considered a developed economy then China will have to reel in its emissions at a far greater rate.

Improve with time you reckon? Considering a new power station has a life of 40-50 years and they are currently planning / building ~300+ of them both within China and within other countries as part of China's Belt and Road Initiative you might end up being right towards the end of the century but in the short term no, they wont be improving.

Actually, it's 1.5%, but if you include the coal we export to be burned in other countries it's about 5% of total world emissions.
If every country said its emissions were too small to bother reducing, then no-one would do anything and we'd all go down together. It would be a bit like me saying I should be allowed to speed because others also speed. Good luck with that.
China leads the world in investment in renewable energy, making our efforts look tiny by comparison. They're already reducing coal imports from Australia.
Australia is one of the countries which is most affected by climate change, so we have the most to lose if the world doesn't act. Do I need to mention droughts and bush fires?
At 1.5% global warming (we're currently at 1.1%) you can say goodbye to the Great Barrier Reef - and many of the 60,000 tourism jobs in North Queensland, far more than work in the coal industry in that region.
How could that be smart?

I have to say, that when in china I have been blown away by how much they have done and are doing to control their pollution. It'll always be a challenge while they are doing the worlds manufacturing, but I suspect they are more accutely aware of what they need to do, but they wont be told and dont really need to be told.

Yes, they're way ahead of us and showing a typical Chinese aptitude for business.

Australia could do very very well from moving to zero emissions manufacturing using our competitive edge in resources and energy, according to this bloke, who definitely knows what he is talking about.
