The Amundsen Sea Low (ASL) plays a major role in the climate and environment of Antarctica and the Southern Ocean, including surface air temperature and sea ice concentration changes. Unfortunately, a relative dearth of observational data across the Amundsen and Bellingshausen seas prior to the satellite era (post-1979) limits our understanding of the past behaviour and impact of the ASL. The limited proxy evidence for changes in the ASL are primarily restricted to the Antarctic where ice core evidence suggests a deepening of the atmospheric pressure system during the late Holocene. However, no data have previously been reported from the northern side of the ASL. Here we report a high-resolution, multi-proxy study of a 5000-year-long peat record from the Falkland Islands, a location sensitive to contemporary ASL dynamics which modulates northerly and westerly airflow across the southwestern South Atlantic sector of the Southern Ocean. In combination with climate reanalysis, we find a marked period of wetter, colder conditions most likely the result of enhanced southerly airflow between 5000 and 2500 years ago, suggesting limited ASL influence over the region. After 2500 years ago, drier and warmer conditions were established, implying more westerly airflow and the increased projection of the ASL onto the South Atlantic. The possible role of the equatorial Pacific via atmospheric teleconnections in driving this change is discussed. Our results are in agreement with Antarctic ice core records and fjord sediments from the southern South American coast, and suggest that the Falkland Islands provide a valuable location for reconstructing high southern latitude atmospheric circulation changes on multi-decadal to millennial timescales.

Thanks for that. Interesting . However I think we may find the sudden Stratospheric warming phenomenon mentioned in my post has little to do with ancient weather patterns, and all to do with the modern climate change . I don't pretend to be a scientist, or even a boffin, but by seeking out reports backed by science, and taking the time to read as much of the case of for and against, to me the facts point to climate change is real, it is here, and we must do something about it. Nothing else matters, really, not all the statistics in the World, or the bleating of the fossil fuel push. We are wasting time arguing the point . We should be marching in the street to force our government to pull their heads out of their posteriors and get the best minds in the Nation to work with the strongest political group to work on climate change and water security. The two go hand in hand. And please don't throw the usual denialist diatribe my way, I've read just about everything that has been said in that regard, and I guarantee there will be nothing new to add. And you won't change my mind, so please don't waste your time. Perhaps I'm a bit slow, but discussing this subject on a public forum is a complete waste of time. Here's an interesting article on how a lot of people, average age 33, are creating record sales in caravans, camper trailers and camper vans.

It would appear that these people must be unaware, stupid or hypocritical about the increase in their carbon footprint by towing these things. Perhaps they don't give a rats!

One would probably have to assume that the majority of vans and campers would be towed by largish, four wheel drive vehicles, a lot "Kitted Out", which would further increase their fuel consumption.

Even if towing with a conventional vehicle there will be increased fuel burn.

I noticed the other week, at a van park, that a large number of vans and 4bies were owned by young couples with young kiddies, some very young. Shouldn't these people know better?

To it's credit,this park did have a Tesla charge point. Unfortunately, not an EV to be seen.

Having just gone from a camper to a larger pop top, I can only assume that my carbon footprint has increased.

As the majority are probably not a necessity, should all "Recreational Vehicles" be banned from use until an alternative powered tug is manufactured?
