    Swimming pools

So, I'm about to move into a new place, and for the first time will own a swimming pool. I've never been that enthusiastic about them, given we've got plenty of beaches here, and I've always perceived them as a bit of a financial, time and labour burden. Needless to say, the kids are happy!

Anyway, I'm yet to fully understand ours, but imagine it's either the typical salt and/or chlorine job. However, I've heard interesting things about alternative cleaning methods such as magnesium and using electrical cleaning systems. Anyone able to provide some real-world experience?

I have had booth , found salt is best , just need to clean the chlorinator ocasionally & just to add about 1 lit of chlorine ocasionally to super chlornate . Pool stabilizer is a must which ever way you go to stop sun takibg the chlorine out of the water. The Genie automatic pool cleaner I found better than the Creepy Crawly pool cleaner , they have less maintenance & don't make any noise when they are working .
Pools are a bottomless money pit when you don't use them , I havn't been in ours for 20years but our girls loved it when they were young & now the grand kids love it so that makes it worth it.

    Hey Ranga

We just sold/moved from a house with a pool, Expensive bloody things! Electricity is probably the biggest killer, until I had solar installed
Really miss swimming in this hot weather!!

The pool we had was a Compass self cleaning salt water pool, so I really didn't have much problem keeping it clean, apart from generally once a week emptying the skimmer basket and once every few months cleaning the filters (What type of filter system has your pool? Sand of Cartridge type?) Do you have lots of trees around the pool? I used a filter sock in the skimmer basket to keep the main filter cleaner so I didn't have to clean the cartridges as much.

Find a local pool shop and take your water in for testing, I always liked to support my independent and not just go to Bunnings to test and buy my chemicals, might have cost a little extra but alway had excellent advice and service!!

    Cheers Lemo

Ours is a salt pool and does seem easier overall than a chlorine pool.......

Think I’ve been here nearly 10 years and have replaced the pump twice and chlorinator twice.

This summer we seem to have used more consumable than previous.....in saying that we are pretty slack on water tests, maybe every 6-8 weeks at best. But the water always looks nice and clear.

We have a pool cover (think you have to have one in BBC) but never use it, we probably should as it would save water but than the kids wouldn’t use the pool as it would be effort to remove the cover.

Surely creepy crawlies are no longer used, they are noisy and don’t do the best.

I installed a ‘the pool cleaner’ worked well but wore out quicker than I was expecting. I’ve replace it with a one of similar design https://proswim.com.au/product/rebel-pool-cleaner/ have had no issue and has lasted twice as long and hasn’t looked like wearing out.

Overall we hardly touch our pool, well I don’t touch it at all, raggedy Anne does nearly all the maintenance.

You can hook your pool up to off peak power, although these day ls if you have solar than it’s probably best to have it on normal power and run the pump pump during the day.

Pools can be hard work, and costly, we got lucky.

Had one. won't have another. Mrs. and I don't use it. Kids are grown and gone and grandies are in Sydney with their parents. A hole in the ground into which I throw money.

We have been looking to move to the Sunshine Coast into a smaller low maintenance house. Almost every one we are shown has a pool. I have now told several agents that if We are to buy a house with a pool then $50,000 has to be knocked off the price first up to cover the cost of removing the pool, filling and landscaping the hole.

In Perth over xmas. Mates pool was cleaned up and used for almost the first time in a few years. Beach is near by and preferred by all. He has his first grandchild so perhaps the hard work will be useful again soon in a year or two.
