I have personally seen dark skinned people being insulted and called 'golliwogs' by whites, and seen how hurt and angry they felt, so don't try to tell me it's not racist - I've seen it in action. Its not a joke - it's just wrong.
If you don't believe me just go down to Redfern and start calling people 'golliwogs' and see how it is received.
Mick, nothing personal here, just the irony

The mid 20th century racial classification by American anthropologist Carleton S. Coon, divided humanity into five races:

    • Caucasoid (White) race.
    • Negroid (Black) race.
    • Capoid (Bushmen/Hottentots) race.
    • Mongoloid (Oriental/ Amerindian) race.
    • Australoid (Australian Aborigine and Papuan) race.

    Seriously?

    Take a Bex mate.
People are people and will behave according to their own integrity.
I’ve been called every name imaginable by people from multiple backgrounds.
    So what?
It doesn’t determine who I am.
    Never has never will.
I’ve had the **** taken from me, my family and it’s heritage regularly, both in jest and with vicious vigor.
    So what.

There is a minority of racists in this world and always will be, but there is a larger number giving their actions credit.
Then there is the majority just getting on with life.
Like I suggest those that have found absolutely nothing more important than a balloon to be offended by have little to offer this worlds future.
Nothing. Nothing at all in this world to be offended by.??
You can make anything racist if you’re inclined.
The Black Panther comment is too easy.

Homer Simpson doesn’t define bald overweight white males, neither does stupid balloon become racist.

It was always a blackboard when I grew up and went to school, even though they were green. I was talking to a teacher some time ago and asked if they now use whiteboards instead of blackboards. I was told (in a very stern teacher tone) that "we don't call them blackboards anymore, they are chalkboards" with an emphasis on the word black. Search Bunnings for blackboard paint, you get zero results, even Google blackboard paint and you mostly get links to chalkboard. I know, someone is going say "but that is what it is, a chalkboard" well the other board is an erasable marker board it just happens to be white. If I invented a white erasable marker and made the appropriate boards black so the marker could be seen and called them blackboards, how far do you think that would fly? My guess is right into the AHRC.

EXACTLY!!!! So why should a little black doll invented in the 19th century be any different.

How long do we have to keep dredging up history for the sake of political correctness. I think it is time to move on and live as the Human Race, Earthlings or some other collective noun, in peace and at one with the planet.

Who am I kidding that's never gunna happen.

I'll leave this thread to continue on whatever path it may, I think I have made my point and we can go around in circles 'til the cows come home. If you missed my point it is simply this....

It's a toy. It's a doll. It is modern humanity that has attached the racism to this much loved character.

    Out.
There is no eraser on the pencil of life.

    That's all true.
Personally, I'm colour blind - I just don't care what colour people are. But then I've experienced living in a country where I was in the small minority and the locals had some colourful opinions about whites, particularly Aussies, so I've seen it from the reverse side. They thought all whites were rich uncultured drunks.

Only if they have been Blacklisted, Rob..

I think I have made my point and we can go around in circles 'til the cows come home.
...But if those cows were Fresians, wouldn't they be confused?

Only if one follows Australian Rules Footy.

Sorry to be making fun about this subject but it seems a lot of bunkum about nothing. What will be will be (in the words of Doris Day)

A lot to do about nothing. Making a big deal about " golliwogs ", while ignoring the main problems of indigenous Australia, seems to me to be from guilty feeling white Australians, to ease their conscience.
I’m pretty sure the dinosaurs died out when they stopped gathering food and started having meetings to discuss gathering food

A bookshop is one of the only pieces of evidence we have that people are still thinking

Unless one of us is the Minister for Aboriginal or Gollywog Affairs there is nothing that we can do about this situation. I'm sure we all have more pressing matters in our lives to be concerned about than this sort of poncy garbage. One can spout/pontificate all they like but it will not change a thing.

    Gollywogs Rule.

Just the name of the singer, the words to the song, and the songs message, I suggest. In the overall scheme of things, not much, really.
