What the Hell do I charge as a Professional Development Consultant? Autism

    Hello All,

I have been approached by a school to prepare a professional development session to their teaching staff about the Autism Spectrum. I am an Aspie and a parent of a couple of them too. I am hopefully - fingers crossed - into the last twelve months of my PhD .... in Autism. I also have a Bachelor of Adult Vocational Teaching and taught successfully for seven years. Since leaving teaching I have worked in the disability sector assisting families with sons and daughters with Autism. I have also presented papers at international conferences about various aspects of .... Autism. Yes I have paid my dues. However, I would not have a clue about my being paid.

The school is located three hours away from me so it will involve six hours travel and at least a night of accommodation. What is a reasonable - not a rip-off hourly rate? Should this rate include travel/accommodation or are they quoted as separate items.

As some of you may know from another thread I posted; I will be officially be notified of my redundancy from my current job in the ensuing weeks.

I have wanted to break into the educational professional development circuit for years - this has been the first time someone has mentioned paying me for it. In the past I have given workshops to government departments for gratis.

How come there is no course - "So you want to become a consultant...."

I would greatly appreciate your insight.

    Kind regards
    Lionel

    Lionel,

Hard to say what to charge - but I would be happy to open the bidding at around $500 per 8 hour day.

That’s probably on the low side. But you have to factor leave, tax, expenses etc into the rate.

Also, the possibility of securing repeat business.

    Cheers,

    Neil

    From your explanation
You are a qualified expert in the field WITH experience in training and development.

Different worlds (acute healthcare vs teaching) but coming across my desk I wouldn’t balk at someone with your quals, temporary contract,

-Asking for $130+GST per hour of teaching
    -Accomodation re-imbursed
-Travel re-imbursed at ATO rates 60ish cents per k

In reality, I have no idea of the going rate fot your expertise. But as a starting point, $100 ph is about the lowest that a self employed tradie type of job can remain viable. From that point consider how much more you skills are worth; how much discount the lack of shopfront rent, tools and other capital investment is reasonable; finally what value do you put on your skills, knowledge and time.
Be careful, many non-business types undervalue themselves.

x 2 - as a starter. After all, think of the opportunity cost when you could be being paid to do something else.
I would also say that anything above an hours travel is also billable for time, not just km, which is to compensate for the running costs and depreciation of your vehicle.

As a IR consultant a few years ago, the going rate was about $200/hr all up, except for adding in long distance travel or other extraordinary expenses - and they were often at cost plus 20%.
Don't sell yourself short - it is a combination of your qualifications (formal and otherwise) plus your skills (different) that are being sought/paid for.

Only if you think it might be the door to a long term arrangement should you even consider a lower initial rate to break into the market.

The best of Aussie luck to you.

Agree with the above. I have no experience in your sector but generally $100-130/hr plus GST plus expenses would have to be in the right area.

Is there a professional association or organisation that you may need to be registered with before you start charging for your services?

I don't want to see you get your fingers burned.

They would also be able to advise you on charge out rates etc.

    Hello All,

thank you for your advice - I greatly appreciate it.

I submitted a paper to an upcoming international Autism conference earlier in the year. When I got back from holidays I received an email to inform me that my paper had been accepted. It was peer-review so other researchers in the world formed a panel and selected who would present at the conference.

This will be the my sixth time I have presented at international disability conferences. Three times in Hawai'i - well first one was presented by my PhD supervisor on my behalf, second and third times by me on my own. Two international Arts in Health conferences held in Australia; but, with international speakers and attendees; then in June it will be at an international specialist Autism conference held overseas.

    Kind regards

    Hello Rambling boy,

Gee I did not think of that. Thank you for your insight - I had better do some research into professional association membership.
