I had to put an imobiliser in my Series to satisfy Shannons so I added GPS tracking too , I can interrogate the GPS vis SMS and enable the imobiliser to shut the car down . I guess the hacker does the same thing , anyone can do it, all they need is the sim card number or IMEI.

It has been done, I'm aware of a Lexus that was shut down remotely to prove a point but that's with a ICE system that's heavily integrated into the car ECU. Don't think we have any problems like that here

Hmmmm, what does this mean?

I know I get worried when I park in certain 'burbs with this on the window.

I have run a Quiktrak remote monitoring/alarm in my Td5 110 since I bought it new in 1999 (to replace my 300Tdi which had been stolen).

It has an option to disable the engine remotely (and lock the doors if I had central locking) but only while the vehicle is stationary. I have never tried it not wishing to temp fate but the option is there on the app. Has all the now usual geofencing over speed etc alarms and heaps of features I would never use.

I have no doubt if you hacked into QuikTrak you could shut down any vehicle.

This has been around for years. I first came across it in the USA probably 20 years ago. It was then a private sector thing for fleets. The vehicle was wired up with covert gadgets that recorded usage and could remotely shut the vehicle down. Car stolen ? No worries. Phone the tracker company and they would shut it down and tell the police where to find it. Handy for keeping a check on sales reps and other outside workers. Compare the vehicle log with their call and expenses sheets and issue a "please explain".or a "go now and don't let the door hit you on the ass on your way".
