Planners often talk about the ‘good old days’ before cars when people lived where they worked and how the world would be a better place if we returned to those days.
They tend to overlook/ignore that today most working families have two incomes and they are not necessarily generated in the same place. The more specialised the job market becomes the bigger this is as an issue as skills are not transferable
Then there are the health issues. There were/are plenty of industries where you would not want/be allowed to live near them. Even today we have seen in the recent health problems that the current urban design standards for high density housing are not fit for purpose
Where is the housing to go? Previously people voted with their feet and moved away. If it was actually the worker utopian paradise the planners remember why did the people leave?
