Earliest severe (≥H3) hailstorm
The earliest known severe hailstorm in Britain occurred at Wellesbourne in Warwickshire in May 1141 and was at least H3 in intensity on the TORRO Hail Scale. However, there are believed to have been one or more fatalities caused by hail - which would infer very large stones and hence a much higher intensity rating.
What is interesting here is the changes in the hail events. I did see two people try and run to their cars in the event which killed my Disco. They were bleeding badly from hail stone hitting their heads and hands as they returned to cover. Hands held over their head as they got wack or ten!
Not dead happily!

I got hammered by a heavy hailstorm near Goombungie a few years on my motorcycle. I was wearing Bellstaffs and full face. My head was being jolted around and when I got home I was covered in angry red welts , some becoming bruises. Btw if you know the road to Oakey there is not much cover to find.
yeah, I was working out there at that time.
regular as clockwork the storms came through and it was all hands to hangar everything.
no one minded, the hangar doors had to be closed where the Pilatus Porters were as they could fly if the wind got over about 40 kts. no tie downs inside the hangar
CURTAINS,YOU HAVE CURTAINS TO FADE??? OMFG!
We just use S/H cement bags & cannot afford proper posh curtains JEEEEEEEEEZ! A bit dusty at times but they don't fade.
Probably accounts for why I wake up each morning with a dry throat.![]()
BTW, they are buggers of things to wash IMHO.![]()
