    Actually, I think both of those cheaper ones we have found about are for the petrol engined tractors. I'm sure it would bolt up and fit perfectly. It just wouldn't have the grunt to crank the engine over!

    It is solenoid starter. Looking for starters there appears to be two types. Lever type starters and solenoid starters. Nearly all the solenoid starters come with a "free" ignition switch so you can convert the lever over to solenoid start.

    No decompression, just 90seconds on the glow plugs this time of year ( brutal on the battery ) before you hit the starter.

    This is the cheapest starter I have found so far.

    it doesn't come with the ignition switch. I've emailed them to verify it is for a diesel not petrol engine

    A guy at Geelong Rewinds might be able to fix that, or would know what to do.

    Can't remember his name, but just mention that the the guy who used to make all his windsurfers made the recommendation.

    That starter has done a motza in less than idealconditions.

    I served my time in a rewind shop and used to both repair and replace commutators. From the photos that one is beyond repair as at least one of the segments has come loose. In those days we could buy replacement commutators, but mostly for dynamos / generators. A starter motor has much higher risers on the commutator bars because the windings are usually rectangular in section and very difficult to solder the connections. Many of the older starters and generators were made by the same manufactures, Lucas and Bosch mainly, or CAV with bigger 24 Volt units. The smaller ones all had the same number of bars, and mostly the same size shaft, and therefore the mounting was not a problem.

    If the rewind shop does automotive equipment they may have an old starter motor that still has a good commutator that could be changed over. These days most starter motors are just scrapped, regardless of what may be wrong with them.

    Yep, I'm amazed that starter still worked. I rang Stonyford tractor wreckers today (even though I was sure they say "Your joking right, there all 50years old a worn out). And he said "Oh, we unloading one of them from the truck now... let me check....... Hmmm, it looks like it has a new Bearco starter fitted, are you interested in that"

    So I have a used starter heading my way now .... That sure was a 1 in a million type fluke

    Given I figured these guys must be amazing I asked for a PTO lever and brake drum linkages .................. And he just laughed and said "Yeah you and everyone else".

    Also try Irish Vintage Scene magazine. A 50/50 mix of cars and tractors. Always pick a copy up when am over there.

    Well I just fitted a new set of pencil type 12volt glow plugs to the old tractor (replacing the series wired 2volt plugs) with some new wiring...... What a revelation .... Why the hell didn't I do this years ago! 9degrees outside (feels like 5).... usually 60seconds minimum on the glow plugs would be required ( the user manual actually suggests a minimum of 60seconds) which is absolutely brutal on the battery ... infact the battery is getting tired, so it will barely crank once its warm enough. New pencil type glow plugs .... 10-15seconds and it fired instantly (with a rapidly spinning starter as the battery wasn't completely drained!)

    Can't remember if my old 165 even had glow plugs.............if it did I never used them. It would start and purr after maybe 1 engine revolution.

    The Deutz I have now (the last of the non electronic engines) is the same.
