Stand up Paddle Board (SUP) Questions

    Hi All,

Anyone here had experience with Stand Up Paddle boards (SUP's)?

I'm looking to get a cheapie and will either be a new inflatable of second hand solid one. There's heaps of cheap inflatable options but some are a bit questionable. I'm guessing I'll have to spend $400+ to get something decent.

I have had fun on a few several times now. I do not own one. I would go for a second hand solid on over a inflatable. Great exercise and fun in the surf if your up for some real fun. Polyethylene would be a base line. Honestly think the inflatables would be likely to sit unused a lot do to the extra effort and other issues they might present.
    Have fun

I would personally not consider an inflatable board
I have a 9'6" epoxy board which is good for flat water paddling as well as catching and surfing waves. Also have 8'5" which is difficult to paddle and is for wave riding. Im 75kg
I paid $700 second hand a few years ago, and a good paddle was another $200. Great for maintaining fitness and is ideal for days when the surf is not good for surfboard riding

Your choice of SUP length, width, volume, shape, material will depend on a widerange of variables: your weight, your agility, your water skills, flat water paddling, wave riding, transportation etc.

I've had a couple of inflatable Bestway SUPs bought from eBay. With a Trayon camper, we can't carry traditional SUPs as they're too long, but the inflatable allows us to deflate and roll them up and store them on the roof rack, or in the camper). At home, we leave them inflated to use on the wife's car with roof racks, and I'm surprised how they keep their pressure (which is easily topped up). Not a stiff as a conventional board, but ok if you don't want to surf them. Also handy for the kids, as whilst they inflate harder than I expected, I'd rather get hit by an inflatable.

Much better than I expected, and a good way to get out on the water. Hot tip - you can buy alloy inflator adapter to allow you to pump them up with a normal schrader valve pump.

    SUP adventures

Had some fun on the SUP today
After catching some nice waves, on a solid and building swell, a rogue set caught me and my tether (legrope) snapped.
I was about 400m off the beach, alone, on a reef break, and my SUP ended up 200m from me
This was my first experience of being seperated from my SUP board. Trying to swim through breaking waves is very difficult with a paddle in your hands!
I was pretty exhausted by the time I reunited with the board.

    Some lessons learnt today,
Ditch the paddle and find it later (the paddle floats),
or have a small length of cord in your wetsuit/boardshorts to tie to the paddle and tow it so you can swim with both arms

Just a footnote to my SUP adventure yesterday
I heard today a 3.3 whiite shark was caught, tagged and relocated nearby, just after I was floundering around after my lost SUP
This white shark was the second target species caught in 7 months of the WA fisheries smart drumline trial
Sharksmart - Scientific non-lethal SMART drumline trial

I must admit I felt a little bit vulnerable swimming awkwardly after my loose board so far out to sea.

I bought my wife an inflatable SUP. An iROcker.

    https://irockersup.com.au/

It is great and deflates into a bag about the size of a large pack. I have rigged up the inflation hose to connect to my ARB on board compressor in the Fender and to the portable compressor I keep in the boat. Takes a couple of minutes to get it to the 14 psi required. I am over 100kg and it supports me no problem.

Maybe not the whiz bang rigid board surf model but for getting about on the water and convenience of storage and transportation it is the go.
