Isuzu DMax on Canning with a broken axle

Mid July last year on the CSR we came across a extra cab D-Max that was stranded at Georgia Bore. Both rear springs had snapped off half way between the diff housing and the forward spring mount. Other vehicles in their party had driven to Newman to meet up with a delivery of new springs up from Perth, so they could get them going again.

In talking, it was probably a mixture of being overloaded and going to fast through some sections of the track.

Weirdly, it was probably the worst issue we had seen over the whole trip of both in our group and fellow travelers.

Just been watching a few other video this guy does....I reckon the guy that had the diff failure is a regular on the motor bikes adventures, seems he experienced in outback driving ‘riding’ which makes me think he probably wasn’t doing anything crazy

maybe poor selection on suspension and unlucky with the diff.

A couple of years ago,my son went in the Deefer thats in my sig,across the Simpson desert,etc,then down to Cooper Pedy.Just as they were driving into Cooper Pedy,his mate's coil sprung Patrol tray back,snapped off one of the top spring hangers,the other side was almost broken as well.He had airbags fitted to the rear.

Pretty common issue when the airbags are pumped up too high.

The vehicle was left there,and repaired by some guys who had fixed quite a few with the same issue,everything was piled into a now well overloaded Defender,and they made it back to Brisbane,no issues at all.He then flew back and picked up the patrol once it had been repaired.

Thats right they did have one issue,they were night driving and drove into one of those big muddy shallow lakes in the desert(it had recently rained),and thats where the stuck Defender stayed for the night.The next day no one came along,and it took 4hrs to get it out[biggrin][biggrin]

There is nothing that I know of that smells like EP90.

If it wasn't in use in that app, what was?

The canning is one of our planned future trips for the county. One thing is for sure ; the weight issue will be well and truly scrutinised, and suspension sorted.

I saw the problem immediately.

It's the tyre choice.

They've been blamed for everything else.

I have one on my ranger now having put a rock into one of my almost new Faulkens and got it cheap at Olympic Dam last week.

Caltex Delo in various weights has a borate based EP package so you don't get that sulphur smell, as does the Penrite race 85w-110
Brilliant diff oil, but how many actually use it?

Oh, and the borate EP package doesn't play well with water so not much good if you are doing lots of creek/river crossings and the risk of potential water contamination is high.

There was a known issue with DMax rear axles up to 2016
After 2016 the housing was changed
Personally I think the DMax is the pick of the new utes
Could of used an unbreakable Hilux lol

Bet he wishes AUIO.com.au was as well supported as this place...
