when you goto tighten up on a load the strap you need to pull on to lift the ratchet and pretension the main strap is on the wrong side of the drum.

I cut the ends off the straps that I use to tie my boat down with, That leaves about 500 cm that I just tuck in[thumbsupbig].
It is a PITA having to roll up the excess strap and hanging it with a loop through.

all good if your strap is only used for one purpose - not really practical for general purpose straps however

after tightening the load I pass the loose end into the handle, behind the strap of the handle go all the way around the handle and then back behind the section of the strap that comes off of the drum and passes through the handle effectively forming a round turn and half hitch using the straps loose end securing the handle of the ratchet to the ratchets strap.

This is exactly the method I was shown by a bloke who did not trust ratchet straps locking. After forming the "round turn" and "half-hitch" around the ratchet handle. To further secure the loose section it was taken to form a clove hitch on the tie-rail and a couple of half hitches. If there were still a loose length of strap it was either tied off in a clove hitch further along the tie-rail or tied off against another strap or thrown back over the load and tied down. This bloke did not like straps flapping loose in the breeze.

Looking back and putting things in context ... it was around the time when ratchet straps first started to appear. Maybe the bloke had some transition issues from being dependent on rope and/or chain work secure loads to progressing towards ratchet-straps. In retrospect - some of the treatment of the ratchet strap is very "ropey".
