Shame they had to somehow shove an auto box in it, because the tool squeezer actor couldn't drive a Manual!

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'>New Aston Martin stirs up Bond fans

Aston Martin, immortalised by fictional superspy James Bond, this week unveiled its latest model ahead of it featuring in the next 007 movie.

The company is keeping exact details of the DBS&#39;s specifications a secret before actor Daniel Craig drives it in Casino Royale but it&#39;s said to be a fusion of the DB9 road car and DBR9 race car.

"The DBS also has very clear links with our heritage. It is instantly recognisable as an Aston Martin," says design director Marek Reichman.

An earlier model of the DBS was used in the 1969 film On Her Majesty&#39;s Secret Service, starring Australian actor George Lazenby in his only outing as the world&#39;s most famous undercover agent.

Cars featuring in Bond films are a much discussed and debated subject among fans, with car manufacturers keen to get their marques on the silver screen.

Aston Martin cars may forever be linked with James Bond films: Sean Connery first drove the iconic Aston Martin DB5 in the 1964 film Goldfinger.

But writer Ian Fleming, on whose novels the films are based, had Bond drive a grey 1933 Bentley convertible. In the original Casino Royale in 1967, actor David Niven&#39;s Bond drove a supercharged black Bentley. In 1995&#39;s GoldenEye, German carmaker BMW&#39;s Z3 model caused a minor controversy by becoming the first non-British production car used by Bond.

Other BMW models were used in subsequent films until Pierce Brosnan drove the Aston Martin V12 Vanquish in the last Bond film, Die Another Day, in 2002. [/b][/quote]

Much as I like to side with luddites whenever possible; and much as I like my Defender gearbox, I have to weigh in on the "tool squeezers" side on this one.

I might be barking up the wrong tree and misunderstanding FenianEel but I don&#39;t think the old prejudice against autoboxes can be sustained any longer. Especially in high performance cars. The clutchless paddle shifts are definitely the way to go.

I read somewhere in an article about a high performance car (it might have been an Aston Martin actually) where a company official said to an assorted bevy of journo&#39;s "Look the only reason any car maker still supplies a manual gearbox option is to keep motoring journalists happy". His point I think was that in 2006, you&#39;d have to be a bit of a "tool squeezer" to bother with manual transmissions.

If the rumours turn out to be true and the 2.7 transit diesel is put into Defenders and you can get that 6speed auto box as an option, I will have to go away and think about what I&#39;d do if I was buying one. I think I&#39;d go the auto.

    James,

I have an auto, I love it.
    The tool squeezer bit was because the actor didnt know how to drive a manual&#33;&#33;

The actor also doesn&#39;t like guns
And lost some teeth on the firt day of acting. He is very unpopular with the Bond fan clubs.

Auto Defender is very nice to drive. Heaps less hassle when off road. My only problem is I want more than a 4 speed auto.

I was stuck in traffic going home from work in Pyrmont the other day, and had a brand-spankin&#39; DB9 in front of me at the lights. Very nice.

    Very.

Just on the Aston Martin/007 thing.... my older brother is my half brother (different mother). OK... so what?

My older brother&#39;s mothers&#39; husband (a &#39;Mr Johnson&#39; if I recall) ran a car dealership down in Melbourne during the late 60&#39;s. He was given responsibility for looking after the original Aston Martin DB5 with bullet-proof screen at the back, tyre-sherdding spin-offs, etc, etc. while it was here on tour. My older brother David got to go for a spin around Calder in it. True story.

Anyone who prefers a manual Aston hasn&#39;t driven one&#33; Bloody hell the pedals are heavy.

Can&#39;t speak for the new ones, but the ZFs in the old V8s are a pain around town. No springloading in the gear lever in some of them either, it takes a long time to become familiar with them.

Trust me, you can use the brake pedal as a footrest, & the brakelights don&#39;t come on..

Funny thing is though, once you&#39;re used to it, you wouldn&#39;t have it any other way. I hate the superlight steering/pedals of Commondoors/Fords/anything Japanese.

    Regards
    Max P

Nice car stupid actor. I still reckon that Colin Farrell or our Jacko would have made a better bond. To make it worse its a remake of an older movie, they could have come up with a new story line. Matt
