The race horse breeders breed a **** load of horses to get just one money maker. The remainder are abbatoir fodder. It is a numbers game. The lowlifes treating the industry waste like that really are scum of the primate species. I hope those people lose their jobs..I have no time for animal cruelty.

A sickness born by greed. No doubt about that. But we shouldn't over react. I gave examples of back in the 50's, when it was the wild west, and regulation of the industry was , well, slack. Since then, the industry has been cleaned up to a stage where those dodgy trainers are getting caught and rubbed out . I'm not making excuses, just don't tar them all with the same brush. Some of the best people I know are in the racing industry. And they are not fools, they are not going to ruin their lively hood by doing the wrong thing. There's so much more that can be said, but hysterical over reaction [ and not accusing you of that for one minute] would be counter productive.

I agree and I don't see the need to keep breeding faster horses, it is just an excuse for gambling, and most of the punters would pro'ly bet on two flies crawling up a wall. Likewise the need for riding crops, the time a horse wins in shouldn't matter, just the fact that it won. I also agree with "Roy & H.G.", how can it take a jockey a 5 year apprenticeship to learn how to hit a horse with a stick? They should have a cap on race horse numbers, like I said it doesn't really matter how fast the horses are, everyone runs, some win, some lose, and no need to shoot any of them.

They should all have a brand or serial number with something distinctive like RR for "Racing Rules" RR is my favourite, because it conjures the prestige of Rolls-Royce, and have a system to look after them if a subsequent owner can't, and awareness campaign so that everyone, even little kids at Gymkhanas, Barrel Races, Pony Club, etc would recognise the horses and people would know that if the owner couldn't look after it, or it needed medical attention, that it could be surrendered to the Racing authorities and they would care for it.

".....but Uncle did use jiggers [ batteries in a match box set up to give a slight shock to the sweaty neck of a horse ] , and I used to hear the strappers talking in hushed voices about some of Uncles horses running 6 inches above the ground because of ' special ' feeds he gave them. [ possibly a reason he won the Rockhampton Cup. ] But the one constant was the love of horses that those on the ground [ jockeys, strappers et al] had for 'their' horses. If there is cruelty, I doubt it would come from any of them, because they were self regulating. Any one found hurting a horse was taken around the back of the stables, and sorted."

    Justin, I agree completely.

Also just because something like a "jigger" is battery driven, doesn't mean it is harmless think of Tasers, or Meggers or the ignition coil on a car, it is only 12 volt but delivers several thousand volts to the spark plugs due to a collapsing field, and the horses certainly thought it was terrifying.

Roy and HG ? This is getting ridiculous. Ok, who is responsible for the horses at the end of their racing life, and what can be done.?

Who's responsible for the slaughtered ex-racehorses, and what can be done?

Why horse racing needs a social licence to operate.
