    Hi all

Yes, looks like it's no different to the greyhound industry. I thought that with more $ in the horse racing industry (compared to the mostly tragic, low income, greyhound breeders) they would look after ex-racing horses a lot better. Also was interesting as to how the greyhound industry "feeds" off the ex race horses - literally!

A few years ago I took the time to downloaded and read the complete report by the inquiry into the greyhound racing industry rather than just rely on what I read on the internet and saw on TV. Based on that I report was very disappointed when Baird caved into the industry and his fellow politicians. Now I'm thinking that maybe horse racing as it is organised and run currently needs the same shakeup.

Who here is going to the Melbourne Cup to support that industry? I wonder if there will be some disruptive activities at the upcoming Melbourne Cup?

Very good investigative journalism. Their evidence shows that the NSW Racing Board is not at all committed to animal welfare, despite what they promised some years ago.

So exactly where are we going to put all these horses that don't make the cut or are too old to race anymore, Remember a horse lives for 25-30 years?
YES it IS sad that they get knocked on the head and end up on the European market as food or in our pet meat at the end of their career But seriously what is a "Workable" alternative?
YES it would be ideal to put them all out in a paddock to retire But who is going to pay for the feed, vet and farrier bills for the 20 odd years of their retirement.
Then where are we going to put all these thousands of horses, Simply letting them go in the bush is environmental vandalism and there are not that many people with a spare 5-10 acres per horse they can spare.
At the end of the day horses are simply livestock like chickens and cows and I don't see too many people getting bent out of shape about McDonalds or Kentucky fried chicken killing their livestock.

    Agree.
However I was appalled by the disregard for the welfare and the cruelty shown towards these animals by the Meramist workers. One worries how these grubs treat their kids.

I have long wondered how the quaint 18th. century pastime of horse gambling has survived into our modern age. Other than a source of taxation for governments the economic value of the horse was finished by 1930, but delayed slightly by petrol rationing during WW2. Even the use of the horse on pastoral properties has been steadily diminishing. For more than thirty years I have been noticing positions vacant ads in Qld. Country Life and The Land that call for stockmen used to bike and quads and helicopters in mustering etc. "No horses on this property" was commonly seen. Recreational riding is in my view the only modern day use for the horse other than as a vehicle for taxation.

Watched it and thought the method used to kill the horses was 'very' poorly managed. The handling of the horses was appalling unnecessarily rough.

With many parts of the world eating horse meat I do not have an issue with the industry. I do have a issue with its shockingly poor animal handling. It will be fixed or shut down. Over breeding was a funny complaint I thought. I love horses and also loved my pet pig as a kid. Her piglets tasted just fine and made me a motza.

Are those feral horses in the Alpine Parks still being left to run free until they destroy the landscape & then die of starvation, apparently that's ok
By all means get a Defender. If you get a good one, you'll be happy. If you get a bad one, you'll become a philosopher.

They should be culled. They are not native animals and are as great a pest as rabbits, prickly pear, parthenium weed, carp.

Take a walk and see just how many Greyhounds are now pets,, and in case you dont live somewhere where owners actually walk their dogs, let me tell you there are a LOT!

Can we save them all? (greyhounds) of course not.
But greyhounds as normal pets have shown its not just fringe dwellars that are opposed to the destruction of working animals past there gambling life.
