MoveLater2 My amatuer cricket days are over

My son has been after me the past few years to play cricket. The E grade captain which is a friend of mine convinced me to take up the game. Up until now I have ever played backyard cricket.

Played first game last weekend - first time batting and running to avoid my first run out took a dive and got some nice carpet burn up my arm - nothing to worry about.
Thursday night training and things being a bit wet missed timed a catch and got hit square between the eyes. I now have 2 nice black eyes but nothing broken.
Yesterday go into bat - 2nd time ever in a game, made a single Yeah no Duck for me today End of over - now facing a spinner - first ball let go, 2nd ball do a nice sweep shot past all fielders, looking good for at least two or three runs so take off running to non strikers end and just as I go to tap down with bat and turn and burn for run two - my foot stops and the body keeps going sideways, twisting the knee and I go down like a sack of spuds. Retired injured.

Dr thinks at least the meniscus, knee is swollen so cannot properly asses for ACL rupture. Referral for MRI and ortho.
Off work for at least a week.

I think your user name may be apt! Been there and done that. Around 10 years ago I was playing indoor soccer 5 nights a week. I had a few minor injuries but was ok at work. Then I went into business for myself - end of competitive sport for me! If I go back and play now, I reckon I will end up the same. Good luck with it!

Suggest you think about Model Train setups. That doesn't appear to be fraught with much danger.

    Famous last words eh?

Me,i never got on the field, they knew i was no good long before the team was picked, which i was happy about.

    That was years ago.

One of my brothers has a son who is around 16yrs old.

He was in the schools cricket team, then made the zone team.
Last summer he was hit between the eyes with a full toss, during a game.

    A week in hospital,quite a few ops,and 6 weeks recovering.
It was his nose that was the issue, but it is sort of back to what it was at last.
    Bloody painful time.

Geeeezzzz Paul, that could have been really really nasty. I look at the Test Helmets & can still see impact points where a bloke could still get it. I assume he was kitted out with one?

No helmet, they are trialing them now.

What they did say was he was very lucky, having had a big nose.
For some reason with theses types of accidents,a larger nose is better.

Last season our league made it compulsory to wear a helmet while batting for all grades. A couple of the older members it was the first time they had ever wore a helmet.

A work mate showed me a video a couple of years ago where one of his brothers mates got a ball to the face while batting - was not a pretty sound / sight. I think he ended up with facial fractures.

As old as his tongue and a bit older than his teeth.
