Sounds like the bird is coming off worse in your return to cricket than you are!
Last week at cricket training we were doing a fielding drill where we had to throw the ball at a single stump.
I was backing up behind the stump for the over throw, and my team mate made a throw at the stumps, suddenly there was a bit of a puff of white and the ball deviated - but he had not hit the stumps he actually hit a small bird, about the size of the cricket ball and killed it.
Sounds like the bird is coming off worse in your return to cricket than you are!

Was it a small duck?
If you don't like trucks, stop buying stuff.
I was playing golf at Morack one day and my partner teed off and did the same thing about 40 metres from the tee. One of those black and white peewee things. Cloud of feathers and one dead bird. And no, he didn't get a birdie for that hole.

My one in a million was on the Golf course. Put my second shot right of the green into a deep bunker - more like a mineshaft actually - you know the ones that have a wall built up of sandbags. From the trap, the green was about 2’ higher than me and only about 6’ in front to the lip of the green. Thinking I had zero chance of getting it out, I thought I’d give it one wallop then chip out of it sideways for a better approach.
I walked up to the ball, didn’t even give it much thought and gave it some welly with my sand wedge. Much to my and my golf partners amazement, it popped up onto the green and rolled into the hole for a birdie. I didn’t even see it from where I was but the boys cheering and some phrases similar to ‘you jammy sod’ but not G rated...
Tiger woods eat your heart out... 😁
