Grumpy old buggers thread

We often tell people trying to get to see overworked "underpaid" busy GPs they should go to emergency as it is an emergency which we cannot help with. Over booked- lunch times booked up. Home time deferred in GP offices all over the place is very common and always has been unless we stand on our hands rubbing our heads on a full moon in may leap year only perhaps?[biggrin]

People we always send to Emergency- No bookings Abdominal pain later in the day- Appendix?? Broken bones(?) Friday afternoon. X-ray take time then if broken needs attention several hours after we have closed!

The "emergency" sniffles are very different to 'real breathing difficulties' Sore throats or a splinter are not emergency yet check at the really abusive records at most Medical places will find more than a few_ ITS AN EMERGENCY.

Not a new issue and really really frustrating for both sides of course. As said often Common Sense is 'Not' common.

Very intelligent people in pain or worried do it as well! Self entitled types are the worst. Sit in any busy emergency department for a few hours and your jaw would drop I bet!

We love Nurse On Call. They are very risk adverse and often tell people to see there GP. Some people take that as push in and demand to be seen in GP land or Hospital Emergency departments- 99% of that is at Public Emergency Departments[bigrolf] Bet you can all guess why!

Daily it happens in every Emergency Department:rulez::rulez::rulez:

Really sick kids/People get delayed by not very sick people going to EMERGENCY departments. Not discouraging anyone who thinks they are /may be having a stroke/ heart attack or similar from calling an ambulance.

Put our prices up $10 a few weeks ago. )ur Item23 $80 is still under the inflation adjusted indexed amount the Medicare rebate for a item 23 is now ( $39.75 ).
on its equivalent real value 38 years ago.

If you come to the "Emergency" department you get seen? I think I see the problem is worse than I thought

"She said that while wait times had ballooned due to the overwhelming demand, no patients would be turned away from the hospital.
"We would never turn anybody away, I just need to make that really clear. If people come to our emergency department, we will treat them," Ms McDonald said.

"It does unfortunately mean that when we have the challenges like last night, some people who are less clinically urgent will have to wait a long time." Link ABC



Ms McDonald did suggest "parents should consider alternatives like GPs or the Nurse On Call telehealth service first before bringing their children to the emergency room."

I wish she highlighted what is and is not an emergency [bigwhistle]

That would depend or not whether you are paying yourself $500,000 per week.[bigrolf]




All this has pushed most prices up so much so even we need to think twice about making an appointment, which stills seem hard to get, especially for our long time GP who has looked after my health now for about 30 years.:clap2::wub::TakeABow:

The previous one in another Practice was of the type that got sucked in by Med. Reps with Free Lunches, Computers, trips to the Moon & buckets of the Colonel, the next one was a really nice woman GP who unfortunately moved on to another distant practice but was very thorough. Our current one is a real nice bloke who has overseen my latest biggies, trouble is he will retire one day so I'd better not have any more of those. He also likes to chat about his dad who served in the 43rd/48th Regiment (a SA Regiment) & his late Mum who served in RAANC overseas.


A short consult turns into a long consult but if he is happy to talk who am I to complain it is a two way st. He even offered to help me do some boundary fencing a few years ago. We didn't, but it was a nice gesture.

Is all this down to young folk NOT wanting to be Doctors?
When I left school (70's) all the brighter kids wanted to do medicine or law.
Obviously, I was not one of these kids.
When did kids going to uni decide they did not want to become doctors?

When they discovered they could make far more money as a specialist than they ever would as a GP.

You'd hope, if the market economy is working as it should, this would come to an end soon when the over-supply of specialists leads to competition.

Why you under estimate your qualities, Paul?[bighmmm]

Those "young Kid"s then may not have been able to achieve what you have & remotely as well.

We all have different qualities & aims.


Some excel some don't. Being able to be a Fridgie has opened many doors for me & I don't mean just beer fridges or Cool rooms either.[bigrolf]

I started & ran a very successful AC business for 40 odd years with just me & a good sparkie when needed, after I was retrenched.


If one is happy with their lot & comfortably off & still breathing what more should we aspire to?


The next door neighbour's Missus perhaps?

IIRC some schools of medicine limit the numbers of enrolments. which keeps demand high.
