Pre my Disco I had a Lexus RX ( still in the family) Brand spanking new the speedo showed 100kph when actual speed was 89kph.
It took a lot of kicking to get it much closer to the real speed. I often wonder when getting dirty looks when I over take at the speed limit IF the slow ones are misinformed about the actual speed they are doing. My 2005 disco speedo was only on the money when I put my 17inch and MT tires on.
I had to remember NOT to drive at 105-08 ish in the 2005d3 when the muddies went on. The 2009 D3 is dam close. I have yet to add the muddies to her yet.
GRUMPYAustralian standards allows car speeds to show 10% error as long as it has the car slower not faster than the real speed

I remember back in the day when the Pacific Highway was a poorly policed one lane goat track and locals referred to certain interstate truckies (as they were called back then) as 'struckies' because of their habit of punting motorists off into the shrubbery.
Some drivers were notorious for popping pills to stay awake because they thought that was the only way they could meet the unrealistic deadlines set by certain transport companies. Arrive late and your work dried up.
Local blokes so desperate for work they applied to drive for a certain well known company were advised to make their wills before getting in the cab. It was a cut throat game.
Thankfully safety has improved thanks to tougher regulation, but mainly because of the reconstruction of the Pacific to motorway standard, which has seen the crash rate plummet, benefitting g everyone.
Just need to finish Ballina-Grafton and then build the Coffs bypass and by about 2022 it should all be roses.
Aged wanderers will be able to meander along at 90, minimising their emissions while dipping their bickies in their recyclable travel mugs, without having trucks up their bums.
Maybe.

I need clarification!
Am I a Grumpy Bugger because I am old?
Or am I old because I am a Grumpy Bugger?
I have been Grumpy a hell of a long time.
According to SWMBO I have been a Bugger since she meet me.

It's a bit worse than that. It's 10% + 4km/h. The limit of "The speedo must not indicate a speed less than the vehicle’s true speed" means they *have* to make it over-read to ensure it never under-reads for all combinations of approved tyres/wheels/inflation/tread wear.
So the manufacturers are kinda buggered.
I built an accurate digital speedo in my other car which periodically re-calibrates itself from GPS and when I set the cruise control "bang on" the speed limit I can generally run down the freeway and pass everybody (or I could if Perth drivers would learn to keep left rather than sit in the right lane doing 15 under).
The speedo in the D3 is off about 4-5%, but that's with tyres down to the wear indicators, so it'll go back up when it gets new shoes.
