I always understood that AMPOL was an acronym for the Australian Motorists Petrol and Oil Company. Does anyone know if this correct and was it ever actually Australian-owned ?
A point of minor historical interest is that, in NSW, at least some of the now-disused underground and camouflaged petrol storages adjacent to, or close to, defence establishments were in AMPOL ownership by the 1960s. The sites I know of were away from the town, close to railways and had their own sidings (for fuel delivery), and were picked up by Caltex in their takeover.
