The web site for one of the local historical societies records fisherman being paid so much for a ton of mullet and less for "mixed fish" by one of the local canneries. There were several canneries up there over a period. Google Moloney Bros. cannery. Moloney Bros had a wharf at the end of Welsby St. New Farm and ran regular services of freight on small vessels up to Bribie and Caloundra into the 1950's. One of the brothers owned the well known block of flats "Coronet Court" in Brunswick St.

Ian, you are well out of touch. Lots of canneries and preserving works around Brisbane from the 1920's to the 1990's. Most are, sadly, now closed. Palm Chutney survives only as a brand name of Riviani. The Golden Circle farmer shareholders took their 30 pieces of silver from Heinz and ran. IXL took over State Cannery/Victoria Cross and closed it. Now units. Vita Brits closed and manufacturing taken south. Eta Peanut factory gone somewhere.

A place in Coffs Harbour actually straightens them.....for packaging purposes...more fit in the box.

They would not be kept busy with the miniscule NSW banana crop. Over 90% of our bananas are grown around Tully.

The works at The Gap whose name we could not remember was Mason's Preserving Works. Proprietor Claude Mason. Don't know when it started or closed but the historical society has a photo from the 1940's and one of Claude Mason displaying some of his products at a Bicentennial Exhibition in 1988.

Not in Brisbane but in Ipswich , I can remember in the 50's & 60's walking past Johnsons Lolly Factory in Bell St after getting off the train going to my Grand Parents place. The smell of the Easter Eggs being made at Easter made your mouth water.

There was also a boning room export meat packing plant on the corner of Vulture St and Wellington Rd. AFAIR it was Anderson Meats.

The Vita Brits factory and Palm Chutney used to drive me crazy sometimes while sitting in my classroom at East Brisbane State.

Kinnears Ropes on Lytton Rd , not strictly food processing, but beautiful aromas of hemp.

BTW Sanitarium has a big factory now at Berkleyvale, as does Sara Lee at Lisarow and Mars (Masterfooods) at Berkleyvale. Most food factories have moved to greenfield sites outside of major cities.

Hans Smallgoods are still in Brisbane AFAIK but owned by Japanese.

Shirley you mean Easter eggs made at Xmas time & Hot Cross buns ditto & 2020 Xmas lollies made at Easter time?.
