Found this interesting graph from Denmark. In case your grasp of Dank is a bit lacking, like mine, the orange bars are number of flu tests, the blue line is the percentage of these that test positive for flu. The orange arrow at the top is when Denmark was locked down, pretty much the same as here. Sort of suggests that it works as well for flu as for covid 19. Remember that Denmark is at the height of their flu season.Flu_decline.png

What the actual **** is wrong with people? Yesterday morning my kid couldn't see any of his teachers/physios because someone had stolen a crapload of masks from his ward, and we needed to wait for more to be delivered. Again, WTF?!?.

The world has gone stark raving bloody mad. On the other hand, this has shone a big spotlight on those that are actual arseholes (and they are not as rare as I'd hoped).

Brad, my ex and my old psych convinced me there are a lot of selfish, self centred people in the world. (The ex not through example! She's a great person)
I used to give far too many the benefit of the doubt.
Its times like these you see a person's true nature come to the fore

Interesting indeed. NZ opened up the flu jabs early for the elderly and the vulnerable. The rest of the population gets theirs mid-April. The early release ran out in most locations due to supply issues around expected numbers and now many who were counting on getting their protection early, cannot. This information should placate some concern. Flu and SC-2 use the same vectors so I guess measures to reduce the R0 of one will impact the R0 of the other too. I wonder if the media will pick up on this. It'd really assist with calming some out of their concern and perhaps reinforce the message to isolate.

Our Ministry of Health press conference mentioned joining the AU and NZ flu tracker site to record respiratory issues as one way to keep track of both flu and covid like symptoms. It crowd-sources data about respiratory issues in a community sense and ascribes a percentage of the local population with issues. Makes for an interesting concept and is a useful tool with regard to data provided from the non-testing perspective.

See the map that results in glorious detail here. https://denden.shinyapps.io/MapApp/ or via the "View Map" page here if that link doesn't work. Flutracking.net | Tracking Influenza Across Australia and New Zealand

Vectors for the flu -> People. More specifically, the respiratory tract and all that gets expelled from it and all this lands on directly or indirectly to enable transfer to others.

Social distancing, masks, self-isolation are all touted for covid control. This same control will effectively render the usual seasonal flu spike a little flatter than usual I guess if the Danish data is anything to go by. Time will tell.

Edit: R0 is the infection rate of a disease. R0 of covid is stated in the media to be somewhere like R2-R3. That is one infected person usually infected up to three others. If we are all inside, this breaks that ability to infect and reduces the R0 rate. Not sure what the usual R0 of the flu is but I think I recall something along the lines of R2.

    How'd I do?

I have seen R1.3 quoted for flu. R2 gives exponential growth, which flu doesn't have.
