I wonder what the date will be when AULRO becomes the World Covid Forum, with this thread soon to reach1000 pages, all full of rhetoric and news clippings.
I suppose that if even one life is saved because of it, it's all worth it!
Some info on the new UK and SA strains
Mutant coronavirus in the United Kingdom sets off alarms, but its importance remains unclear | Science | AAAS
and an interesting graphic on the level of genetic sequencing by various countries.
The UK and Denmark are sequencing at much higher levels/1000 cases than other countries in Europe which may be why the UK has picked up this new variant first. (place your cursor over the bar to read the test/1000 cases)
Considering the overall case loads in Europe compared to here and NZ it's impressive.

Always a worry when you hear an expert say "I haven't seen this sort of thing before". [bighmmm]

Not only were half the cases caused by one specific variant of SARS-CoV-2, but that variant was sitting on a branch of the tree that literally stuck out from the rest of the data. “I’ve not seen a part of the tree that looks like this before,” Loman says.

They’re also wondering how it evolved so fast. B.1.1.7 has acquired 17 mutations all at once, a feat never seen before.

But scientists have never seen the virus acquire more than a dozen mutations seemingly at once. They think it happened during a long infection of a single patient that allowed SARS-CoV-2 to go through an extended period of fast evolution, with multiple variants competing for advantage.
My brother came into contact with Covid positive people twice last week at his workplace and is in home quarantine. He got tested last week and again this week and despite both tests being negative NSW Health requires him to stay in home quarantine until 31 December. Doesn't seem logical after two negative tests but I guess while we know the tests are not 100% accurate, their accuracy is probably a bit less than they have publicly advised hence their cautious approach to home quarantine despite negative tests.
