It is not just the cost. The BioNtech vaccine (made by Pfizer) is a novel type of vaccine, using novel manufacturing methods. The Astrazeneca one is made in the same way that most decades have been made for decades. This means that not only is it cheaper, but it can be made in Australia using existing production lines (and actually is being made at present in expectation of approval - risk being assumed by the Federal Government), which means that it will be available long before any additional BioNtech/Pfizer doses can be delivered - all production capacity for probably most of this year is already paid for by countries that are much more desperate than Australia.

So it comes down to "do you want the cheaper vaccine in the first quarter of the year, or pay ten times as much for the better one in the last quarter (assuming a desperate government in the USA or Europe does not stop overseas shipments before then)?"

I guess we should be thankful we are not like the UK and the USA, Europe , Japan.......just about every one else besides N Z . Could be a good time to pour some funds into the QLD vaccine, which was touted to be over 90% effective, just have to fix the false positive AIDS results. Couldn't be too hard, could it?

They were using fragments of a protein that is also found in HIV that stablised the vaccine so that it consistently worked. So not really, and by the time they redevelop, they're at the very least 1 year down the track from now and the ship will have already sailed.

From all reports we can not get any more of the Pfizer, and this thing could be with us for years. Just seems a shame they were so close.

Thanks Saitch. It's difficult to contact him since the football club closed down, a lot of people are concerned for his welfare. My connection to Ian is his brother served on a patrol boat in Darwin with me. I used to see him on a Friday night at the raffles, just a casual acquaintance, really. But part of the Rooster family, they tend to stick.

While CSL is very busy making 50,000,000 shots of the UK one, I suspect the J&J version just might fit in our Vic production plant. They have already said the ULTRA cold two are not really in our current production/manufacturing plant and equipment. Role on DATA. I love science[biggrin]
