no wonder it isnt a popular place to be...
Minor problem with this is that much of Australia has been in drought for years, most rural employers are very deeply in debt and struggling to keep their heads above water. And costs for all inputs and red tape just keep increasing, while prices they get for most produce keep going down. Most of the farmers round here either have an off-farm job or their wife does, so they can afford food and pay the power bill etc.

Of course there are exceptions, but they are just that, exceptions. While it is easy to sympathise with the farm workers, this sympathy does not provide the money to pay extra.

And this does not excuse the poor treatment that some workers get either.

The only reason many international backpackers go fruit picking is if they do 20 weeks work the government will extend their visa for a second year.

I see one tourist destination in SEQ has listed 8 QLD post codes as hotspots.

I booked four nights away from this Thursday, paid barge fees, 4WD Permits, camping permits and caravan parks....all though the one organization.

Even though their booking system is a little misleading I eventually sorted it all out.

24hrs later a document is emailed that we have to completed. No problem I thought, this will be just ensuring I haven’t been to hotspots in NSW or VIC and that I haven’t been in contact with anybody or have had convid-19....I was surprised that eight QLD post codes are listed as hotspots along with NSW and VIC.

Good thing I hadn’t visited any given there was not warning during the booking process, which I need to enter three times, about declared hotspots. Would have been a pain requesting refunds.

Just checked the queensland website and no mention of declared hotspots in Queensland.

just a little heads up if you planing of visiting NSI.

And what are they going to do in the army? - the military has enough of an issue keeping troops occupied in quiet times (there is only so many rocks you can paint white and only so many times the ships can be painted) let alone having a bunch of no hopers who dont want to be there causing trouble - the military is complemented on the basis of a wartime/action basis so when in peace and not exercising for many there is not a lot to do - hence in times of natural disaster and Covid 19 - the military is able to provide personal to help.

The issue of peacetime conscription often gets raised by silly politicians and other do gooders and they are soon put back in their place.

They used to spend their time doing Civilian community works around the place - all of the drainage and the old levy banks at Lincola Kids camp were done by the ADF back in the late 70’s as an exercise, but when asked 10 years later to do some maintenance on the levy they told the camp they would love to but the rule had changed weren’t permitted to do that anymore. There’s 100’s if not 1000’s of community things that could be done by the ADF if they were looking for things to do and allowed to do so. It would be way better having them out there doing stuff around the place rather than twiddling their thumbs looking for something to do.

than twiddling their thumbs looking for something to do.
    Like having a War.

They could be used to accompany the Cops around knocking on doors & asking if they are at home. Also be a 2nd pair of hands in case the miscreants got a bit handy with their fists although they need to be quick on their toes to beat the cop pulling out his tool. ie. Pistol.

No problem with the military doing community service - have done plenty myself - but we dont need the military to be a work for the dole organisation - there are plenty of god botherer organisations who can do that.

Not just the idea of everyone becoming a soldier
Learn a bit of work ethic, respect and a bit of gratitude for the “benefit” they have received
I wouldn’t put them to work around the community, I’d drop them off to Norforce
4 weeks of learning some “real life” skills
Not many would want to spend another 4 weeks out in the bush after there first stint and would hopefully get a job
I agree there is only so many rocks that you can paint white, once a ship is painted, there are plenty of white lines that need repainting on the major highways (and they could pick up all the litter the grubs have thrown out there car windows (2 for 1 bonus))
If they want to cause trouble during there service, they could always have a bit of solitude in the lockup for a night or two
A lot of countries make their young adults do a bit of time in the army, then they flee their own homeland and reside in a country where they can bludge on the dole (ring any bells), oh hang on they do support the economy, they spend the “hard earned” tax payers dollars down at the local casino

Being unemployed is not a crime!
Over ninety percent of people getting social security would love the opportunity to earn an income.
