I look at maint as if it ain't broke don't fix it but both Fire Pump & Gennie do get a run but on high fire days they get kicked in early in the day & we stay in. Just like the good old lockdown days in fact..


The Fire Pump has it's own rotary sprinkler to cover it & the surrounding area which is off the gravity fed pipework. The ONGA is well waterproofed in it's own right so no dramas there then. It can also be run with it's canvas cover on if needs be. Crosses fingers & legs.


Besides, 'er indoors says we are not staying put. She has Asthma, albeit on a small scale & I 'm not sure I could be running & jumping all around the place if there was nobody else here. The large concrete Tank is always kept topped up from the bore so at worst I'd be leaving things running & bugger off to cooler climes until it was safe to return.

We have a Million Gallon (so we have been advised [bighmmm]) dam which the CFS can use for dropping a Basket Filter in & I suppose, although not yet been tested, a Chopper could drop a hose or two in as it is well accessible above.



The CFS often remind us that there will not be a Fire Truck sitting at our front fence for" just in case." But then again, I ain't a mate of anyone in the local Brigade either. [bighmmm]



We came here in 1987 after the bad 1983 fire which swept through here & so far have not had a problem but we do have the paddocks slashed & other inflammables are on a heap well away from any buildings etc but I'm told flying embers could still be a problem as they can travel a few KM & i have no control over what could happen that far away. Hope Not. People told us we were bloody crazy but we instantly had the paddocks of 4' dry grass cleared which the owners had allowed to build up just because the property was on the market. The olde let someone else do it thinking.. A Friend comes every year just after Xmas to tractor slash most of the place & another bloke comes with a Whipper Snipper to get the bits where the Tractor can't.

Makes a mental note to self to check on the 200 filled Army Jerricans in the shed. TiC.

Yer know, thinking about what I have written It might be more inexpensive (or less expensive )& convenient to build a Bezos/Amazon yacht & take off for the middle of St Vincents Gulf on those days.:Rolling::BigCry:

The Telstra contracter that came here a week or so ago said he is now not allowed to use an extension ladder to get up the pole to fix a problem [bighmmm]

So next day he arrives with a ute with a cherry picker fitted to it,drives onto the footpath and makes two big tyre grooves in it as it’s recently rained[bigsad]

I wasn’t home,luckily for him.In fact if we were not on a hill a recon he would have got stuck[biggrin]

So looks like I will have to sort that mess out.

On another note,not bushfires but floods.At the local Town,around 30 Km from the property,couple of years ago they were watching the river level with interest,as it was rising rapidly.They had four large front end loaders ready to do earth works when needed.
When they did need them,they didn’t get far,someone had stolen all the fuel out of the fuel tanks,a total of more than 600 litres.
How they did that is beyond me,Thats a lot of fuel to syphon out without being seen.
They must have used pumps,and a few 200 litre drums i recon.
The thieves were never caught.

Christ this thinking has spread! Same happened here after many mobile calls to TELSTRA to repair or replace the landline cable, bloke called, took one look & said he had to arrange a Cherry Picker from Engineering & that would take about 3 weeks. In the interim a Good old school Tech arrived with a coil of cable & an extension ladder. Stobie pole is near trees so he disappeared up amongst the branches on his ladder & tossed a new cable on the hooks went down & finished the job.


Talk about a load of "No Can do bull****" these days! TELSTRA Need to have a Part No for Tradie Balls/Testes but I'm afraid the locker would be empty or still full as the case may be.[bighmmm]


A few weeks later NBN was installed with no need for a Landline as that is done with Wireless to a tower quite a few KM away.


Ref my post a couple of weeks back. A young Tech turns up out of the blue to "Test the Pole" ie. drill some holes in the base . WTF!



He asked whether ho could get close to the pole in question as he wasn't sure the Ranger could make it.


"What Ranger? sez me thinking he had a mate with him.? The one in the yard, sez him.. A brand new Ford Ranger ute with all the bells & whistles The track was muddy sure, 1/2" of semi solid ****, but it wasn't impassable.. He wasn't sure, so walked it.



In the Army, as some of you would know, you need instruction in the use & operation of the range of vehicles you may need to drive in your job & be issued with a G11, endorsed with same. (Drivers Licence) Obviously not the case with Telstra. He obviously thought he'd get bogged & would need to call his boss for a Recovery Operation. That is the sort of **** we are paying for.

Here we go again! This morning about 0630 I picked up the phone to tell the ABC that their local transmitter had dropped out.

No dial tone!

So on the mobile, find a spot it sort of works, and spent the next hour on the phone to Telstra. At first it was going to be fixed by Monday, but then they found it was an exchange problem - so now it will take another week to fix.

I am getting rather sick of this.

Up until the floods my Telstra NBN was very hit & miss , after loosing power for a week when power came back on it was the best it's been since the NBN was connected with no dropouts . Last Saturday I received a text message from Telstra that they were doing NBN updates in our area between 1am & 7am Monday morning & there would be no internet or land line service . All day Monday we had dropouts all day, Monday afternoon I received another text with the same message for Tuesday morning same times , so thought they were fixing there stuff up Monday . Since then the service has been off more than it has been on & has been like that since Tuesday 7am, this morning it is back to it's usually hit & miss crap.
Guess they wanted to get back to the norm so needed to down grade it .[bighmmm] I could ring them but don't want to sit on the phone for hours going through all the checks only to be told it is working fine which it is by the time I get through to some one . The last time I contacted the CEO's office they only connected me to the same Tec support people as when I ring for support. I had 6 modems here at one stage to take back to Telstra shop because the service man would not take them .

My landline and ADSL (which is my backup) have been dead since the floods here. The estimated restoration day keeps moving out. My fixed mobile broadband which provide mobile coverage in the house and is our primary internet access has been up and down since the floods but Telstra are not admitting any fault suggesting congestion as so many telco towers aren’t working at present!

Still 3rd world telecommunications. We had more reliable telco service here 25 years ago.

The issue I have - we have not had any floods! And it still stops working every month or so, usually for a week or so. This morning I went to the village to pick up mail. The shop is at their wits end - mobile is out too, so no phones and no eftpos, so cash only.

Nothing new.
