I purchased some retaining wall slabs a few weeks ago, some sort of hardwood.
As I was walking out I saw a handsome kind of gnarly and knotted piece of pine about 1200x300x40 which was flat and looked perfect for a hatrack I was inttending to build. So I bought it for $30. Using old iron rail spikes off the old Ghan Railway, I set them at 45 degrees with the help of a drill and angle grinder to dress the spikes from square to round to set in the timber.
those spikes are pretty tough iron I can tell you.
its 75% finished and is trial hung in my entrance , a few other spikes to set in it to suit my lovely lady, and finish it with something...not sure what it should be , varnish? lacquer? oil?
I got the blowtorch out and burned and then bashed the flapdisk around at bruised it while using it as my workbench.
anyway first look she really likes it....I had to confirm that twice.......
if I can master putting a photo up I'll do it
