Lockdown/Stay-in-place situation, What are you planning to do?

My daughter is an infants teacher. She's a strong advocate for keeping schools open because the kids then aren't roaming the streets increasing the risk of becoming contaminated or staying with elderly, high risk grandparents. At school they wash their hands 6 times a day, desks are spaced to keep students apart and not facing each other and they always sit at the same desk so as to always have the same students nearby. Grades or classes are allocated to specific open areas for controlled density.

I'm a primary producer so mostly unaffected by restricted movements.

Am self employed and looking for ways to do some tasks remote rather than the usual turn up on site method. On Friday managed 2 out of 30 tasks in 2 hours remote. Same work would have taken 8 hours on site. Be interesting to see where this goes longer term when the novelty has worn off.

Daughter is a teacher in the Catholic system. They want schools to stay open, partly to ensure children aren't wandering around unsupervised, in the case that parents can't leave work [ police, etc] and also to relieve the pressure on any health workers who are needed at the coal front. What has been suggested is that with school holidays coming up, that they extend the holidays by an amount to be determined. No decision on that yet.

As a truck driver, paid by the kilometre, I find working from home restricting my income somewhat. [biggrin]

I have been working from home for 7 months, after being booted from my rented workshop. We have just signed a contract to buy a place, but that might be put on the backburner for a while now.

If my suppliers stay open and my customers keep coming I will be able to keep working. Plenty of "ifs" there though.

Spoken to a couple of smaller businesses this morning - both are halting their storefront trading as of 5pm today but are continuing with online and phone orders that can be picked up from their dispatch area where everyone can maintain safe distances. One place I buy from quite regularly said to just call in, ring them, pay over the phone then drive around the back to pick up. Not all can do this and I’m sure they’ll see a sharp drop on sales, but it will keep the lights on a little longer. I’ll still support as many as I can during these times.

Was in Bunnings first thing grabbing a few things for work - they have said they’ll continue to trade until they are forced to stop.

Currently still working but that’s a day by day proposition at the moment so will take what I can while I can. Company is looking at options to minimise the disruption so they can keep everyone on long term but that could mean we’ll all have to take a pretty big bite of an enormous **** sandwich in the meantime. Is what it is...

It has not affected my routine in any way.
It has affected SWMBO though. her workplace's business continuity plan sees a weekly rotation of 50% of staff onsite, the other half are WFH.


People have gone absolutely stupid with ADD and the need for videoconferencing, because they can't be the watercooler socialite in the office anymore.
Gives me the sh*ts. I've been rather abrupt with these nuisance calls.

I've been working from home fulltime for a decade now, and always used the technology.
Seems now that everyone's using it, they want to waste everyone elses time, just so they can be 'seen to be working' - aka presence on a conference call is actual proof you're doing a job? hardly. Just do your f-ing job! then, if you have time to yourself, go offline and utilize that time-out to maintain your mental health.

The reasons mobile phones and email exist is so you can keep your communication with coworkers succinct and to the point... instead of wasting more than 60% of my time with pointless videoconcalls.

If this resembles you, or your workplace - make sure you are clear to all you interact with that this kind of communication can be more efficient over email and everyone does not have to be tethered to a live stream the entire working day.

You will thank me for it. Maybe not this week, but I can assure you, the novelty wears off VERY quickly, especially when it starts interfering with deadlines.

I work in emergency services, so unfortunately as long as people still get hurt (or think they are hurt!), or feel that they have a pressing need to go to hospital, life won’t change for me. I do need to be increasingly diligent on having a shower & changing out of my uniform before leaving work tho.

I did buy a tin of house paint on the weekend as prep for an extended stay at home. And scouted the shed to make sure I had adequate supplies of consumables to progress a few LR resto tasks if isolated.

Trouble is I work from home anyway, so a stay at home order will not affect me too much. I'd rather disappear to the shed but will be told by SWMBO to get back to the computer to keep some income coming in...
