Yep my Primary school had an 'OPPO' Class as well.

How many kids were hammered by their teachers for being "Dumb" when all they were was Dyslexic, now well understood these days?

Speaking of schools. Kids whose parents were poor &/or Widows for instance, received Exercise Books with Orange covers not blue/grey like all the other class pupils? Discrimination ? Yep bloody oath.

A close relative of mine went to a convent for his primary schooling, in the 60s. He was Dyslexic and had the livin' daylights belted out of him by the nuns.

From all reports, the penguins had no idea about the condition.

Discrimination, or simply so stock losses were easy to track down?

No idea John possibly both, but it seemed when the new books were dropped on the desks by the teacher the Orange covers were always on Bert's & some other's desks.

Today Bert is probably working for the EU as a Scientific Consultant, him supposedly being a bit "thick" & all. I hope so.

Nice gentle lad, his father apparently died while cleaning out a Chemical or Gas Work's Sludge Storage Tank. Still happens today unfortunately.

My point was why was it necessary to single Bert out each time making it look obvious that he was "different"?

I know what you mean Steve.

Post War, 'er indoors attended a Convent School in Italian Somaliland/Mogadishu/Mombasa after her father, a WO2 at the time, was posted there with the British Army. No English speaking schools there then so it was off to the Convent school.

She was treated with disdain being a British kid & tells some stories about the treatment of Italian Students, mainly Boys. Hard bastards the Nuns were. But she can speak a bit of the Italian Language & understands even more, so it couldn't have been all bad. Not unless it was at the threat of a Caning but she has never mentioned that bit.

The Brothers Schools for boys were extremely hard as well according to my ex-electrician Tony. He also witnessed the Homosexual & Bullying Carrying ons of the Bros. when it was rampant.

He was sent to a Seminary for Priest Training in NSW but jumped ship from there as well, also due to the Buggery.

I know several people who tell the same tale. One woman told me that they (friends and classmates) were terrified of the nuns. Another guy went to a Christian Brothers high school. Now he was a lippy kid and on first day gave cheek to a Brother. He found out why the Brothers wore those heavy leather belts around their robes. What he described to me would nowadays be classed as criminal assault.

I have been familiar with the poem for probably fifty years, coming across it in my father's "Collected Works" of Kipling. He (my father) had a few favourite poems from Kipling, but this was not one of them.

I thought from the stories you have just posted that you might appreciate it.
John, I have a copy of the same book. I got it in a second hand shop many years ago. I like to read "Our Mother Lodge out There". in which Kipling explores the ecumenical nature of Freemasonry. All races and religions were welcome at lodge. Main problem, he wrote, was that they could not have a banquet "lest a brother's caste be broke".

I heard Nuns didn't have legs, they would silently glide, especially if a rule was being broken.
If you don't like trucks, stop buying stuff.
