Brandy or akvavit, not rum. Rum is bad for your health. I learned long ago when a young bloke that rum causes unexplained injuries, damage to motor vehicles, waking up in strange places, colossal hangovers, and loss of friends.

Funny how the memory gets a jolt from something. I first heard this song in 1986 whilst crossing the old Burringbar Range in my IIA, in the middle of winter. I turned to my passenger and asked him whether he thought the birds would be as ****ing stupid as us?
Gawd, it was cold! I'd forgotten this completely, thanks Bob. I have now shared the clip with said passenger and waiting for a reply!

I saw Slim in I think , the Stanthorpe Hotel in 1979.

He played for about 4 hours , but it was his narration and stories between songs that made his show that night.

I don't know if he wrote any books , but if so , would be good reading , he had a pretty good sense of humour.

I have a recording of him singing a variant of "The pub with no beer" entitled "the camp with no beer". It was sung by him in Alice Springs in 1966. I wasn't there - but I was in charge of the camp that provided the story for the song. A mutual friend gave me the recording about fifteen years ago

Another Day , another Town, Slim Dusty & Joy McKean. Released for Fathers day, 2003 [ 2 September]After 49 years on the road, and 60 years of recording, Slim was recording tracks for a new album until the last month of his life. His battle with cancer ended 19 September, 2003. He didn't want a fuss, but they gave him a State funeral. That probably would have annoyed Slim. If you can find an interview with Anne Kirkpatrick, Slim & Joy's daughter, about their early life, it is a ripper. Slim was at home in a remote aboriginal settlement, as he was with Royalty. A man of the people, no airs & graces ,he called a spade a bloody shovel. And Australia adored him. Here is Daughter Anne's tribute to him and Joy;

Yesterday my no3 son & family dropped off an Easter gift, 8 little Easter eggs with 4 alcohol wipes, tied to a gift wrapped toilet roll. That has been photographed and will go into the family archives. " What did you do during the great pandemic Poppy? " Kept our sense of humour, did the right things, and didn't panic. We know only a vaccine will guarantee the World will be safe , but we also know that what we have been doing will keep the infections down. Sorry about the virus talk. We are about to drive to our children's houses and drop off a little Easter gift pack, which they would have received when they came here for lunch in better times. Luckily they are all close. I was shelling macadamia's , but after almost a full morning, I have a bucket full of shells, and a small container of nuts. One for a later time, they will have to be happy with honey fresh from the hive instead. HAPPY EASTER ALL !!! and remember, we will get thru this. One day.
