The COVID-19 & Corona free thread.

Just for a bit of variety, let's have a good news/light hearted/feel good thread.

I have a Grandson who was born premature, at 27 weeks (that's not the gn/lh/fg bit). He has overcome many hurdles, but there are a lot more hurdles too big for him to conquer. He will never be able to live independently (that's not it either). Part of his disability is hyposensitive hearing, every week the garbage truck would send him into a terrified meltdown (nor's this). When he was 3, on specialist advice, my DiL would hold him close and comfort him to make him feel safe, as they watched the truck come and go, from a distance. After a couple or three weeks the driver twigged to the child's fear. He stopped and turned off the truck, then approached Mother and Child. The boy had no fear of people, worryingly, the total opposite. After having the situation explained to him, the driver let Ed walk around the truck and climb in the cab. He then started the truck and showed him how it worked. That added at least 20 minutes to the driver's day. It would appear that once Ed realised it was not some autonomous monster, he overcame his fear: we'll never know for sure as he was non-verbal until 6 yo. Every week, subsequent, Ed would wait for the garbage truck to wave to the driver, who would make the eleemosynary gesture of waving back.
A few months later, on his last collision prior to Christmas, he stopped and delivered Ed a large wrapped present. My son noticed that the cab was crammed full with similar boxes and questioned him. The garbo explained that he had bought every disadvantaged kiddie, on his run, a present. I don't know what the other kids received, but ed got an authentic, working garbage truck complete with wheely bins, about 1:20 scale, it would not have been cheap. This gift evoked a passion for garbage trucks, five years on, a toy garbage truck is still one of the best gift that Ed could receive.
I really hope karma is at work. This is an ordinary, compassionate Aussie who deserves a medal.
If you don't like trucks, stop buying stuff.

As I said Andrew, he'll never be capable of living independently, but he's the most cheerful, affectionate person I know.
Before he started, Geebung Special School, his elder sister spent months secretly coaching him one phrase. On Mothers' Day his parents heard him utter his first words, as his sister ushered him into their bedroom, whilst delivering breakfast. "Happy Mothers' Day Mum." Saw Mum burst into tears.

Special Schools in Queensland are far different now from what they were when we went to school. No longer are they merely a place to park kids who cannot cope (or be coped with) in mainstream schools. Nowadays each school specialiises in various disabilities, actually allowing kids to reach their individual potential. Ed is very fortunate that the school that suited his needs is only two suburbs from home. He loves it and will now miss it terribly.

I'm no hero John, but the garbo is. Just proves that being the smartest or richest person doesn't make them the best.
I've never met this ordinary, working bloke but I still hold him in the highest esteem.

Indeed, Ian. It's your championing of the little bloke I was referring to. And your reference to a bloke who is just doing a job who takes the time... The garbo is awesome. Sadly, he may not come next week. I'll bet you will cope with that.

Sure, you're no hero.. you're just a grandfather. Sometimes grandfathers are the best though. You care, Ian, which is what I meant, aside from the great bloke who is a garbo.

Great stuff , now 19 year old boy is autistic was terrified of rubbish trucks when he was about 2years old but got over it. A stupid woman had a little dog on one of those extendable leads, and no control from her it ran round and round and round him ending up tying him up with the cord. I knly tuned my back for less tan 10 seconds Stupid woman just laughed as she is one of those super arrogrant dog owners who thinks her dog is better than anyone... We have a couple of rough semi boot boys living up the road who witnessed her and put her in her place in no uncertain terms , non phyiscally but she never came back down our street... they had a dog and after a month came and asked if they walked their dog on a tight lead every day at a certian time my son could see it and maybe get less fearful and after about 5 months!of this we got them to come closer to the gate inch by inch and then he finally patted it, fantastic guys but if you looked at them you assumed skjn head types, not in my book.

We have found some people just get it with our Special Needs kids & some don't.
Wilfred (the driver!!) when he was younger was very impressed with his new implanted hearing aid so he wanted to show everyone, he is a very forward & trusting boy, the reaction of some people when he told them he could hear the birds surprized me. But the cleaner at the motel showed so much interest & asked just the right questions. So impressed.

Our autistic boy is the opposite, he only really trust SWMBO & myself. He is a loving boy to us but when he is out he has his head down pretending the rest of the world doesn't exist. We get some very negative reactions with him, partly his size & he looks a aggressive but that is just the stress. The first time we took him to the beach to play & swim he was digging a huge hole in the sand totally concentrating on it, he suddenly just looked up at SWMBO & said "Thanks Mum". She burst into tears.

Special needs kids (we have 3) can be a trial but also so rewarding.

but he's the most cheerful, affectionate person I know.

And there was me thinking you meant Steve H.

That was a great gesture & follow through from the Driver. I guess we'd most probably think a Garbo with his schedule couldn't take the time to even think that way, but he did.

Do you know whether the Garbo has a similarly afflicted child & therefore understood better than most?

Anyway, TOP Marks to the Driver for his thoughtfulness.& I hope he stays clear of this bloody Virus.

On this theme, I just found a Facebook group called The Kindness Pandemic which contains inspiring stories of acts of.kindness in this time. Nice to see something positive on social media
