I ran to Perth a few times just after the highway was sealed. In those days just about the only freight that came out of Perth was Bunnings Bros. timber, household goods and personal possessions of people moving out, and private cars. Almost no commercial freight out of Perth then.

A friend in Koroit bought a very nice Mercedes from the attorney of an elderly lady going into care. Bloody immaculate, only 73,000 k's, less than 5,000 k's in last seven years, always dealer serviced with book and paperwork. He got it at an absolute bargain price as the attorney had advertised for nearly two years without result. Offered it to me at his cost as he has too many cars. I did the sums. Cost of air fare Bris-Melb. Train to Warrnambool. Unregistered vehicle permit. Travel cost back including allowing two nights accommodation as I no longer do desperate overnighters. Then Safety Certificate, stamp duty and rego in Qld. Total brought it up to Red Book wholesale price. Definitely no longer a bargain. The add on costs were more than the asking price.

I just received two independent quotes for door-to-door transport from Perth to Bundaberg. I can only say that the figure quoted was unexpectedly reasonable. I thought it would be a LOT more. Both vehicles are booked in for an inspection carried out by the same inspector. Not sure whether that will be happening today or tomorrow. Unsurprisingly, I will choose the better vehicle.

The drawback to this revelation is that I bought a project vehicle that is located only in New South Wales. Now that quote for transport home is looking very unreasonable. Back to the drawing board on that one. I have now followed V8Ian's suggestion about posting on freight booking site.

Anyway - Fingers Crossed.

Lionel, the industry works very much on supply and demand. Many operators believe any amount of dollars are better than none. Subsequently, freight from the west is often done at below cost, whereas freight north, on the eastern seaboard is a premium.

Time to think laterally if the seller is amenable. Might be some missing steps, but you get the idea.
Prepay for vehicle
Have a pre agreement that you will first privately rent the vehicle for an agreed period (long enough to get it driven back home).
Take to new local registry once happy will pass - will require all ownership papers signed off prior.
Sale agreement takes effect.
Deregister from WA plates and return plates to WA or whatever.

Good (best) idea - if the seller is amenable! I would not be! Although I suppose it would depend on how desperate I was to sell it. Some sellers could be getting pretty desperate by the time the borders open though.

There will be no trips to and back from Perth for me this time around. I received a quote for transportation door-to-door that was very reasonable. So now I am ....

Fair call, but not sure what the seller has to worry about. Full amount paid up front (obviously same as if seller inspected and then bought locally).
Private rental is a paper exercise to cover new owner as not stealing the vehicle ( we wont talk about any possibility of circumventing intermediate govt steps). I've done similar as the purchaser in the past - all liability rests with the purchaser.

In NSW at least, the liability for traffic infringements lies with the owner unless the driver admits identity - for example speed and red light and telephone use cameras.

Well let's just say that I remain a staunch - if not troubled member - of the Series Land Rover sect. However, my yet to be delivered - more modern vehicle is not part of the fold. Nor are its origins Asiatic either.
