I'm right with you there Tombie.

In my last 12mths of working in coal mines , especially draglines , we were forced to use platform ladders. Instead of one 7'/8' ladder we actually needed 3 different size platforms which had to be carried on our vehicle.

At first it was a pain in the arse but once we got used to using the platforms it was so much better and safer to work off, especially inside the draglines where there is so much machinery in close proximity.

As you would know the biggest pain was carrying the gear you needed to the area or equipment you were working on , because the park up could be 100mtrs away. And in a wash plant , how many flights of stairs one had to climb.

But the extra safety afforded by platforms far outweighed the effort needed to carry them to the job.

My 14 screws and titanium plate can attest to not bouncing anymore .

easily done, we have all been there!
Getting an copy of your "Birth Certificate" and running your eye over it every now and then is a good idea. ;)
It doesn't take much to take a tumble from a ladder or height as the body ages, eyesight deficit, hearing/balance deficit, blood pressure changes,
they can all contribute.
Luckily you didn't break any bones or suffer a more serious injury from the head strike, as they can have life changing results.

BLOODY HELL! What if the screws loosen off what then, or have they got split spring washers under them? Maybe they used Loctite? Titanium? You must be one of those rich buggers I read about.[bigrolf]

Not long after moving here we had a Colourbond roof added.

Blokes came & tossed the old Galv iron in a heap ready for cartage to the scrapyard, in the courtyard.


A week or so later we noticed a water leak & called the contractor back to rectify it.


He needed me to go onto the gable roof with him & & get my thoughts.


Got up to the ridge & got that "OH ****" feeling as my rubber soled boots lost traction. Slipped onto my arse & started down the roof & caught sight of an electrical goose-neck light fitting screwed to the fascia & right in line with my nuts.

"Hmmmm" says me " this is not good" as I slid I managed to roll to the left to miss said Goose neck & over the edge I went, thinking I must try & land on my feet & so I did but the momentum kept me going forward towards the heap of old iron. Quickly did a small somersault & landed on my back. Shook my head, got up dusted myself off & stood up.


The heap of distorted iron was as soft as fairy down as it collapsed on itself. Bloke on the roof was amazed & told me of other occurrences of falls that hadn't turned out well at all, & 'er indoors came flying out having heard the commotion & started to **** me off with the usual "I told you... etc etc.


I never believed I had the agility to recover safely but I sure did nor never believed that Colour -bond could be so slippery but it had an oily finish so I discovered, so was real deadly.

So be warned.

Mans best friend can play here too. Trestle ladders set up with planks so could paint the side of the house. Dog watching all this being set up from a distance. Once on the plank and starting to paint dog decides wants to come closer and see what is going on. Jumps up on plank. I am at other end of plank and am catapulted off one way paint the other. Dog sitting on plank looking down wondering why I jumped off!

These stories are worrying me as my next painting task involves doing the high eaves on the house.

This happened on the first wall of the house, lots more to go. Finished what I had to on the day and havnt thought of getting uo again yet. Going to have a few rain days (wouldnt think so looking out the window this morning). So I am heading back to Smithton for a few days R&R.

I have 2 extra high and stable painter's ladders, so I'm planning to tie them together and then tie them to the wall, so they can't move.
