Brisbane - what to do/see while there!?

    Howdy all,

I seem to spend very little time at home these days. I am in QLD mostly around Brisbane from 5/6 to 15/6. Dickhead me didn't realise that there was a public holiday during that time so work contacts will have to wait. Plus there is a Sunday that I am just hanging about too.

So what does a Melbournite do and see in Brisbane? Spending a few days at Oakey at Farmfest also, but most of it will be around the coast.

    Help me!

(I'm just waiting for gags about the big pineapple...)

Good question - you don't actually "do" much in Brisbane except live there.

Firstly, when you say you are in Brisbane - do you have a car? If not, then sitting around in your hotel room is about it. Useless city for public transport or walking. Here are some possible suggestions (from a local's perspective - and depending what you're into).

Kangaroo Point Cliffs (right opposite the CBD) - can take a cross river ferry from Riverside Centre (Eagle St). Good rock climbing if you're into it. Otherwise - good view from the top.

Take a City Cat - high(ish) speed ferry up and down the river. Good way to sightsee.

Train to Redbank Railway workshops museum if you're into old trains etc.

Drive up Mount Coot-tha to the lookout - decent cafe there & not a bad restaurant.

Riverwalk from the city around to New Farm Park. Check out the Powerhouse - Watt modern dining there is an excellent restaurant.

Newstead house - short drive from the city north on the river. Right near Austral Landrover dealership.

Southbank parklands - lots of walks, cafes etc.

Roma St Parklands - more of the same only newer and a bit less tacky.

CBD shopping around the Queen St Mall is open on Sundays.

Queensland Caravan & Camping show at the RNA showgrounds from June 7-13.

Have a look at www.ourbrisbane.com.au and there may be more events on there but these should get you started. Oh, and Split Enz are performing at the Brisbane Entertainment Centre on June 7th.

Saturday nights there is usually something on at the Archerfield Speedway. Drag racing at Willowbank near Ipswich. Drag queens in the valley. Street drags just about anywhere in Logan City. The list is endless - and some people move to New York for excitement...

Or if your not into smoking craic

Are you interested in ships and stuff :

Queensland Maritime Museum, at South Bank.
    http://www.maritimemuseum.com.au/

OR perhaps you like aeroplanes and stuff:

Queensland Air Museum (at Caloundra about 1 hr North of Brisbane)
    http://www.qam.com.au/

Also, if you fancy a day on the bay you could cruise down to Redcliffe, say Gday to me, have some fish and chips, do some tandem skydiving, go on a whalewatching trip (I think they'll be going around then), go for a ride in an historic aircraft... all costs $ of course (thougfh I'm cheap LOL).

Another worthwhile place is the Sunshine Coast hinterland (arty crafty stuff, nice places to eat and so on), which you could combine with a trip to the air museum, if you were that way inclined.
It's not broken. It's "Carbon Neutral".

Spose it depends on how mobile you are and what your into

Down the road are all the theme parks

Across the bay are the two islands

Up the track a bit is Crikey World

you could always climb the Storey bridge

or come to the Brissy LROC meeting on the 7th

watch a game at the Gabba

see a show at Bad girls

    the list is endless

    OK,

    some background.

Me: sales rep/manager of a firearms importer. On business, but stuck there on non business days over the weekend.

Into: guns, Rovers (derr), planes, food, beer, live music of various sorts but nothing deafening.

Not into: kitschy touristy stuff, "big" things (banana, pineapple etc), clubs (especially when you want to send me off to a male meatmarket by the sounds of it)

Not sure I could get to Brisbane in time for the LROC meeting since Oakey is 2 hrs away and I will be staying there until Friday. Bugger!

Anyone going wheeling? Need a passenger to hold the esky???

    OAKEY!!! You poor bugger!!!

The Army Aviation Corps is out there.
The Army Aviation Museum is there - not bad for a look actually.

    The RSL has cold beer

There is a toilet (that talks to you) with automatic doors on the way into town.

Hmmmm, yep that's about it for Oakey

I think that while I'm in Oakey, any time not spent working will be spent sleeping! I'll be stuffed at the end of it from what I am told - I am going to Farmfest which sounds like a fairly big deal.
