I'm "old school" as I still carry cash, not that I use it much, with all the eftpos, I also still have a cheque book, a landline and a fax machine! Some of the new tech is great, on the subject of, the OP might have to get a Sat Phone.

Much the same here except no fax machine - and I can't remember when I last wrote a cheque.

I wonder how the general populace would go if a foreign country managed to close down Australia's mobile network and horror of horrors, social media?

I reckon they would give the invader anything, including their souls, to have their beloved, daily pseudo-gratification processes returned.

Then again, perhaps I'm just making a personal observation as an old fart?

Even market stalls have EFTPOS now.
I haven't had any cash in my wallet for months.
Get a quote from a merchant or tradesman and be told he is so busy it will be weeks/months before he can make a start on your job. Then say "I will give you folding the day you finish /return the work." Tradesman says "I will pick it up tomorrow".

taking memberships in Volunteer Marine Rescue , on the base , up until recently , was often offered a cheque. We also got quite a few cheques sent in with postal applications, probably a lot more over the last few months.

I can get cash if I need it, but I rarely do. I never keep my cards and phone together, not ever. And I only use debit cards, so I'm using money I have. We do have a line of credit, but are not using it. Visa debit cards are the way to go, I think.

Yep, DM, the way to go I reckon. I have never activated my credit cards and have never had any major issues with just using my debit card. We do have the wife's credit card as security when travelling.

Mates, nev34 use debit cards overseas .
    Debit cards are your money.
Credit cards are the banks money.
You can be reimbursed by the bank if there is fraud on their money but it’s a lot harder if it is your money.
