Ian may have consumed too much of the product , but the real story is a very good one, it has a great marketing ploy, a PM of Australia, and more

Bob, what was your particular, favourite poison, rum wise, whilst gallivanting about in days of yore?
'sit bonum tempora volvunt'
Appleton Estate Rum, from the Caribbean. Been made since 1767, from Jamaica mon' , have to admit it was mainly for snob value, it is smooth, but strong.
Appleton Estate 12-Year Rum is a blend of several rums aged between 12 and 18 years in American oak barrels after being distilled using small-batch copper pot stills. The rum is produced on the Appleton Estate, which sits in the Nassau Valley in Jamaica. The estate’s origins date back as far as 1655 when the English overthrew the Spanish to rule the island and Frances Dickinson, grandfather of the distillery’s founders, received the land as a reward for his role in the overthrow.

Yeah you like it or you don't no half measures. I gave up rum after a run ashore in Gibraltar, 1977. The bars there bought up most of the Royal Navy rum after the RN stopped the Rum issue. Go into a bar to order a pint, you get the rum chaser free. My mate and I ended up walking through the tunnels in the mountain to the other side where the water catchment area is. Fell asleep on the concrete used to channel the rain water into the reservoir. When we woke up, it was dark again. Lost a day. Never again.
