    Where were you Navy Diver?

Whale rescue diver lauded as hero for freeing netted juvenile off Gold Coast pays price | 7NEWS.com.au

Apparently this bloke's left himself open to prosecution. Should he be charged and fined, I'll personally lead the fund raiser to pay the fine and heap as much bad publicity, as I can muster, upon the authorities. Without intervention the baby whale would have drowned, it took Fisheries over two hours to respond.

I also couldn't believe that when I read it. He's a hero who should be rewarded for saving a whale, I think.

And they said that was a 'normal' response time

YEs totally agree,he doesn't deserve a fine, and i doubt he will get one with all the media hype.

Hopefully after all the bad publicity, the fisheries official proposing a fine will find himself posted to a fishery around a remote light house somewhere!

I did more than once muck around with a big fish or three happily no cameras or they are simply not allowed now. The fine for helping is all about keeping normal people away. Some video From Remote or military areas is classified.
Cray pots tangle a few large things in places I like. Rescue services are fantastic if they exists of course

It is bloody dangerous. A big thrashing whale would normally be something to stay away from regardless of fines. If you have ever got a largish shark in a boat and you know a broken leg is a real possibility. My dad caught a Mustelus antarcticus my boat last year. It was over 1.6 metres- My gaff shot broke his line and missed the fish entirely. I never miss with my gaff ever

The QLD Diver is cool and clearly as nutty as free divers are (I am). Is there a "get off your high horse fine" support page yet Hope the whale is ok.

Its a possible fine for cutting the shark nets apparently . That's odd + Fisheries are usually very nice gents. Bet this one rides.

"he now risks a fine of up to $26,900 for interfering with shark control nets."
"Queensland Fisheries has confirmed it is investigating but says no fine has yet been issued.

The fisheries minister, Mark Furner, said the rescue was incredibly risky. “It is dangerous equipment. We have unfortunately seen the loss of life when people have themselves become entangled in this equipment.
“It will be up to the department to consider whether this gentleman will be prosecuted.”

Sea World often cut nets and lines to free , whales/sharks/dolphins/turtles.

They say they were standing by but couldn't get coms.

2 hours would be a good response time , Sea World have a fast RIB but it takes ages at 6kts to get outside and then how far away was the whale?

Water Police cannot respond quickly either, they may be at MacCleay Island or somewhere like that.

Just to inform everyone here the fastest responders to any marine situation in SE Qld is Volunteer Marine Rescue or Coast Guard, Volunteer Marine Rescue Jacobs Well is the only marine rescue service with a full 24hr response team. They can be on scene and assessing the situation usually before anyone else is on the water. Write their number down NOW. 55461100.
No matter what assistance you need , be it Police, Fire , Ambulance , SES , they can probably get the best response to you or whoever need it faster than anybody you know.

Sorry to soapbox this but the above paragraph may well be the most important thing you have read today.

Yep, quite a few years ago, a person had to be medivaced (?) off Moreton Island. The Redcliffe Coast Guard attended and had the person back to Scarborough harbour, in an ambulance and to Redcliffe hospital before the other services could get to the island. Not having a shot at the other services, it's just that VMR stations are very efficient and appear to have less bureaucracy involved. They don't appear to need a 'Central Command Post', or the like.

The VMR work closely with the Water Police. Under their direction, if necessary. Did when I was in it , at least.
I’m pretty sure the dinosaurs died out when they stopped gathering food and started having meetings to discuss gathering food

A bookshop is one of the only pieces of evidence we have that people are still thinking
