It is not uncommon to see new threads here by prospective used car buyers, particularly of Range Rovers and Discoveries, asking about reliability. EG - what goes wrong, how much do repairs cost, does the body really have to come off to do repairs, can I go remote touring without something breaking, are parts easy to get, are after market warranties any good etc etc.

My question is this – If you have some $60G or more to spend why would you purchase a used RR or Disco with a few kms already clocked up when $60G will get you a brand new Pajero auto diesel along with the security of being new so reliable with factory warranty needed?

Why would you not buy the Paj?
OR
Why would you still buy the Landrove?

After buying two Discos both with roughly 200,000+ km on them prior to me getting hold of them I know The first did not make it to 500,000+ due to a rotten hail storm. No way I let an insurance company do that to me a second time! Not rubbishing the Paj. My sister had one which is now at 500,000ish with a new owner. Interesting to note the repair and maintenance costs do not seem significantly different. I am sure the 4wd capability is a little different and the reason I own a landrover myself. Comfort wise the Discos 3rd row wins as well. Not that it is use that much I admit. Mates with Patrols have similar stories of joy and failure

With that thought process, why not get a fully optioned LDV twin cab with 5 year warranty for under $30k?

If you have doubts - just buy the Pajero.

Muz seems happy with his cheap and cheerful and to be honest, after following him on easy tracks, it performed well enough. Not so sure he'd be as happy with it for touring or more serious challenges, but horses for courses.

I admittedly know not enough, by far, about the australian car market but if I look closer to home...

New cars:

• Depreciation sucks on larger vehicles down here
• warranties only get you so far and even then companies are always trying for ways to get out
• Bathtub curve problems, which would in theory be covered by warranty
  
  • it's nice and well having warranty to fix the problems but you are inconvenienced at least.

old cars:

• When to old, the here fore mentioned curve
• maintenance
• less depreciation

If I were to sum it up for me: I'd rather spend XXk (where XX is a large part of the 60K budget) on an older vehicle and spend another YYK (where YY is the remainder of the 60K) rebuilding it so that I -know- what I have, then spend a whole lot of money on a new vehicle. Also, yeah, the pajero is a nice car but a range drives better

PS this is of course not brand specific, you could do this with any brand vehicle.

Because for me buying a vehicle is an emotional purchase, I had the same decision a few years ago, order one of the last Defender 130s or buy a Ranger Wildtrack for pretty much the same money. I chose the Defender as I would never have an opportunity to buy one new again and they have much more character than a Ranger which at the time had plenty of horror stories circulating about blown motors and gearboxes anyway.

I'd not be buying the Paj, even though they are good vehicles.
