    Car Industry in Crisis

Tens of thousands of jobs being cut by several car makers inc Nissan/Renault/Mitsubishi..Ford..JLR (seeking UK Gov bail out) etc etc.

Many blame covid 19 but the declines were happening well before that.

Nissan looks to be on borrowed time in Aus as is Jeep. Will be interesting to see if the Y62 survives. Pity Nissan has lost its way....no doubt aided by joining with rubbish Renault..and what a shame if Nissan ruins Mitsubishi in the same way it ruined itself.

Real shame for the tens of thousands of workers..once again screwed by incompetent management.

Real worry for JLRs future too😞

It’s a reset that had to occur IMO. The whole industry has been living on handouts and borrowed time from all around the world - almost no car maker has not taken handouts from the counties they manufacture in. Too many brands and models to be economically viable, it’s taken covid to push this to the brink. The fittest will survive, the rest won’t. Nissan have been a basket case for years now and it’s doubtful they’ll survive - not just in Aus. Others will go down too. Who knows if LR will or not - it’s not the first time they’ve been in trouble.

Yeah..the hand outs are crazy..even in Aus where hand outs supposedly are stopped Nissan pays no tax on its income...and yet it still can't survive. I really think hand outs just encourage mediocrity by management who are happy to take the cash while they can rather than innovate and develop good quality products.

I m sad to see some brands go, on the other hand I was already saddened by the state of the car industry as a whole so won't miss some others for a minute.

If you look at reliability figures and such over the pas few decades it is noticeable that the japanese brands that topped those charts in the late 90's early naughties have not all remained there, and if they have, the number of complaints has risen. What is also remarkable is that the rest has come up. When you think about it though, it's not that other brands have gotten that much better but the good brands have started failing more and more.

Take my 90's honda prelude, I must have taken the dash out a dozen times and worked on it endlessly as a young bloke. Not because it was broken, but always tinkering and changing. I still own it and I rebuild it to better than new (except the engine still needs to be done) but despite the many times I worked on it, there are no broken clips, worn screws, nothing. When I tried buidling in a car kit on my mid naughties honda accord diesel (few years old), the clips broke left right and centre. The problem was (is) that other brands had gotten somewhat better, but were still cheaper and the good brands could no longer compete since average joe only buys with his wallet. This means they had to follow suit to stay in business. Average Joe thinks like this it seems: why pay 50K of you can get the "same" spec car for 40K? And who cares it ends up at the scrappers 10 years sooner, you won't know or notice since you have long since passed down this "car".

It's the same in other industries btw, but suffice it to say, the industry has been kept afloat for too long. I only hope that decent brands will survive and people will start thinking hard about their next purchase. Reward quality and avoid crap.

    I am allowed to dream

    Cheers,
    -P

Nissan needs a good clean out, they make 2 good cars, the rest are rubbish. I think the y62 will survive, numbers say it outsells the 200 series world wide, but not even close here in Aus, but a lot of the toyota brigade are jumping ship.
Interesting times ahead in the car industry, soon a decent 4wd will be out of reach for most, i know for one, i can't (won't) afford a $100k plus car.

Perhaps the motoring industry could re-group, with manufacturing countries allowed to build one type of vehicle only i.e.

    Australia: Touring 4x4s
    Germany: Luxury vehicles
    Italy: Sports cars
    USA: Wankmobiles
    Great Britain: Commuter vehicles
Japan: Something with an original thought.
    Spain: Delivery vans.
    France: Just stick to Champagne.
    New Zealand: Motorised gumboots.
India: Buses with seating for up to 4,500 passengers internally and hand rails on the roof.
    China: Hermetically sealed vehicles.
    Switzerland: Armoured money laundering vehicles.
North Korea: Tonka peddle cars for kiddies
Indonesia: No need. Someone will give it to them
    Thailand: Taxis

    Feel free to add.

Yeah, it amazes me they have such a garbage line up overall when they are building the y62 so it’s not like they don’t know how to engineer something decent or build a car people want to buy. I think their management are just all a little brain dead. I’d have one over a yota any day too. 👍

Local plumber owns a near new GTR...seems most GTRs in Tas are owned by plumbers ...and when you look at the styling which is ageing a bit....and the engine and performance it is clear Nissan can do remarkable things if they want too. Sure the car is very expensive (his is a Nismo special) but it does show what can be done.

Too many quality innovators have lost their way..eg. Honda which used to build quality innovative cars now seems to build mainly out dated engine platforms with limited life spans and relies on warranty extensions to lure in buyers...always a risky strategy.

Remember Renault has only survived by acquiring Nissan technology and engineering. Many of their cars are only lightly badge engineered versions of the Nissan.

You even have Fiat cars made in Ford factories. Chrysler selling engines to BMW. Peugeot badge engineering Toyota cars.

Is any of this about making a better quality product for the consumer? Suppose you have to define better quality product
