Doesn't have to be in the regulations for the cops to give you a ticket for an incorrectly restrained load.

    Hello Hogarth,

Not so much after help - more the benefit of other minds. To determine whether my perspective of being a sometimes curmudgeon has extended into the sphere of ratchet straps. As in - am I justified being peeved at having to fix or rearrange something brand new that I paid full price for? Does "Fit for Purpose" mean having to make modifications to something so that it functions properly?

I will find the receipt and talk to the nice folks the next time I have go there and buy some more goodies. I will not be making a special trip just for the straps. Plus - I am not sure whether a store in Bundaberg will honour any products bought at their branch in Dalby?

    See what happens I suppose.

    Kind regards
    Lionel

Not specifically in the regs, but excessive twisting of the webbing will be cause for a fine.

If you read the NTC load restraint guide, under webbing .. on page 170 they do actually allow for a single twist:

Check there are no knots or twists in the
    strapping.

While webbing straps should not be
excessively twisted, a half-turn may help
to prevent vibration and flapping – Figure
    418.
self explanatory. the reference to figure 418 shows that there is a single half twist in the strap on one side only.
We never used this, and always tried to keep them untwisted, but we only had tautliners at the interstate place I worked for, and with the steel place we used chains.

Also: on the topic of ratchet straps, I have a huge pile of them(all rated) from when we worked with them .. no longer. Brother kept a small handful in his remaining truck, but I think I have a pile of ~30, all high quality binders I'd like to get rid of. Most in very good cond.
    Also some chains too.
So looking for any expressions of interest in offloading them to anyone interested.
The straps are all 2 or 2.5 ton rated, have the much better pull down ratchet, not the push up type that destroys AC joints!
I'm thinking maybe $15, or so, each plus postage(or come and collect from Melb).
Is it worth posting an ad in the classifieds?
    Arthur.

Showing my age a bit, but I recall when the straps first came on the market. The distributor (May have had something to do with 3M) sent a bunch of guys around to roadhouses, showcasing the newfangled things. I can clearly recall the bloke telling us that a twist or two will stop humming or buzzing, and that you could put a dozen twists in them without impairing the strength of the straps.

You're still in short pants, Don.
I was using and selling handstraps before they were commercially available in Australia.
I had a regular delivery of coal crushers, ex-UK to Tarong Power. They were secured to a 20' flat rack with about 15 straps. These straps had small hooks without keepers, suited better to UK vehicles that don't have tie rails.
I could sell all I could get hold of for $40 each, they were popular with brick carters, particularly.
If you don't like trucks, stop buying stuff.
