Recently....as in a couple of years back. I took one look at it and surrendered. Gave it to my investment guy to do for me. It sailed through without a murmur. The dollars he cost me was insignificant considering the potential stress/hassle that Centrelink is infamous for causing.

On my recommendation the same guy did 'er indoors and a mates applications. Both sailed through no hassle and like me ended up with a positive result. The earlier you do it the better off you will be.

    Yes, last year.
You need to be very well organised before you go anywhere near Centrelink, or long delays will result.
When we did mine Centrelink was taking 9 weeks from lodgement to even look at applications, so nothing happened for 9 weeks.
They will want statements for all your bank accounts. Bank statements can't be more than 12 weeks old or they will ask for fresh ones.
So 12-9 means bank statements can't be more than 3 weeks old at lodgement.
Your super fund must provide a document to verify your super balance. Super should be moved from an accumulation fund to a pension fund to avoid affecting the assets part of your income and assets test for your aged pension.
Get the online Centrelink income and assets test and fill it out yourself as a trial run to make sure you have all the right information.
Check the income and assets limits and, if necessary, rearrange your finances well before you approach Centrelink.
Get your tax done beforehand. They will check your tax records with the ATO, so if its not up to date that can cause problems.
Professional advice can be a big help in preparing to deal with Centrelink.
They will want to know everything about your partner's income and assets - literally everything.
Have identity documents such as birth certificates ready.
Read up on the three types of aged pensions: single, single with ineligible partner and couples.
Download the Centrelink Express Plus ap to your phone and link it to my.gov. Doing this means you can photograph documents and upload them without needing to scan, which is a lot simpler. Also you get fortnightly updates and text messages to Express Plus.
Be aware that Centrelink expects you to spend any holiday or termination payments before they will pay you a pension.
Assume your first application will be stalled for a while and they will want changes. Delays are inevitable.
Once it's all approved, they will give a future date when the payment starts. It will probably be after the date you become eligible, but they may back-pay.
Remember that Centrelink is not there to do you any favours, as Robodebt proved.
That said, we found the staff in Centrelink offices to be very helpful as long as they think you are genuine.
It won't just happen in one day. We took online sessions, 4 visits to Centrelink offices plus several long phone calls before it was all done, and we were well-organised.
Think of it as a character building experience. Age Pension
    Hope that's helpful.
    Good luck!

Get your Financial Advisor to do it for you... pay them 'Money' if you have to... worth every dollar. Start early, they will take ages an request "something" you have'nt thought of.

And our 100% Self-Funded Age pension is.... means-tested, so they can hide the fact pollies squandered the nest egg some decades ago.... - Again, a plug for a truste Expert to do it for you !

You are not supposed to "enjoy" the pensioner's life, merely survive till you become bankrupt or (preferably) Dead. Or you could go into politics and hang in there long enough to get a parliamentary pension...then go back to work..and keep ALL the $$$s.

The preamble to the legislation establishing an age pension about 1910 made it clear that the pension was not to be the sole support of claimants but a supplement to those who for reason of incapacity or misfortune were unable to FULLY PROVIDE for themselves in the senior years.

Easy to claim a pension. Take in adequate proof of identity, ALL information pertaining to income and assets, superannuation, real estate, business, trusts, investments like shares and so on, and promptly provide anything else asked for and Bob's your mum's brother. You will get staff offside if you don't provide information requested and after 10 weeks start ringing the local member or the ombudsman complaining that "I lodged my claim 10 weeks ago and have not heard anything and have not been paid."

Ha, ha ......................... you're in for a whole world of pain, disappointment, incompetence and every other bad vibe/feeling you can imagine, and that's just for starters.

I went down the same path you're contemplating a few years ago and it was the most demeaning, painful and soul destroying exercise I've ever been involved in . The 'system' and the people involved seem to take a vicarious pleasure in ensuring it is the most painful, drawn out and frustrating exercise imaginable. Whatever you do don't make the mistake of even mildly criticising the incompetence, inefficiencies or drawn out processes involved. This will lead to a sort of 'snakes and ladders' result where everything is reset and you go back to the start . I kid you not, take two Valium before lining up with the drop kicks at your local Centrelink office and definitely answer yes to the are you of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander lineage.

In the end I gave up, which I guess was the aim of the whole exercise. Yes, it's cost me significantly to 'give up' on the system, perhaps I'm 'too proud' in wanting to retain a semblance of pride or self worth but IMO better than enduring the soul destroying processes of involved.

I can understand that the Centrelink staff are so used to dealing with scum, cheats and the like that they can tend to assume everyone is the same and treat them accordingly, I wouldn't have their job on a free ticket . Coppers can be the same as they deal with the **** of the earth all the time and can assume it's normal, but hey it isn't.

Either way Inc. , I wish you well in your endeavors .

You don't necessarily have to be of retirement age to get the Health Care Card. It can be issued way before retirement age. Your accountant/financial advisor is the man to talk to.

The other thing is if there are problems from Centrelink re your application then your finance man will deal with them....not you.
