its an interesting debate, and even within the SA country fire service there are several different options amid drivers.
i think the official policy is, we don't want civilian drivers putting themselves in harms way or breaking any laws to let us pass. it's not worth it for anyone.
lets say u push past a red and make a mistake and hit another car. we now have to stop and attend to you. the original job will have a different firetruck dispatched which will take longer.
yes it might save us 5 seconds, but it's not worth the risk to you.
There was an incident in the main intersection in the CBD of Canberra which is red lighted and speed camera'd - a car stopped at the lights and a fire engine with lights and sirens and car would not move because of the camera, so the fire engine pushed the car through the intersection. The driver of the fire engine was charged with causing an accident and leaving the scene of an accident.
There was also the issue that a few fire engines got tickets for going through red lights and they were only withdrawn after the fire brigade threatened strikes - caused a bit of friction between police and the fireies - good outcome was these incidents caused the laws to be clarified - drivers can go through red lights etc to get out if the way of emergency vehicles and laws clarified on emergency vehicles going through red lights - when they can and cannot - eg particularly ambulances do not necessarily have to have lights and sirens to be in an emergency situation like when carrying a patient so can go through lights etc.

Some rude so and so stole my 1.5m hosepipe that I use to water the front garden. At first I thought it might've been found by a stray dog to play with, but I had a look up an down the road, to no avail. I normally don't bother putting it behind the fence and just leave it at the tap, if someone had a genuine use for it, (tow rope broke, hose burst on car, etc) I wouldn't mind if they just left a note saying so.
