In QLD to get the (Qual) its just a matter of sitting extra questions during the written exam. We don't have to undergo a course that I know of... well I never had to back in 2001.

I'm a JP (Qual) in Qld.
From memory every JP that sat the new exam is Qualified and this separates you from the previous JPs.
If you just want to be able to sign stuff then you can be a Commisioner for Declarations. This does not require an exam. There is also a JP (Magistrate's Court). Not sure what they can do over and above a normal JP (Qual).
I did the course before the exam but it was not manditory. Just helped you pass I suppose.

I did the course in about 97 or 98, not compulsory but helped with the exam. Back then, if you passed the course you could be appointed a (qual) JP. If you did not but still wanted to be of use in the community, then they made you a CDec.
JP (Mag) is an extra course, by invite, after expressing interest, that allows you and one other JP (Mag) to sit 'on the bench' for petty sessions courts in remote areas or when a wig is sick etc. Has to be two and each decision unanimous.
I expressed interest but was told no need for the extra qual as I lived in an area with plenty wigs. That and I kept saying 'hang the guilty b*astard' during the interview:p

I'm a C.Dec but nowhere near Runcorn. I would suggest you just go into any bank. They usually have at least one on staff or can point you to another nearby.Quote:

I've actually tried banks etc before and the last few times they say they don't have anyone and to go to the JP stands in the shopping centres. Which are open for a couple of hours twice a week or so.
Which is surprising as they are either lying or have sacked their staff that were JPs as I've used them before.
It gets a bit annoying when you are the only JP in your family. Great for everyone else but not so much for me.
