You guys in oz have it pretty bad I gather. I for one think that the airwaves are public space and should be run by the government. Don't get me wrong, I support free market competition, but the actual airwave infrastructure should be planned and maintained by some central agency. in this way you won't get 12 cell towers in one area because every provider has it's own, and none where you would actually need some! Over this infrastructure providers can buy bandwidth etc. and run their own business models.

Ah well, one can dream right?

NBN (national Broadband Network) is a Commonwealth government QANGO (Quasi Autonomous Non Government Organisation)
ie it is a private type company owned by the government.

The Netherlands is about as big as a suburb of Sydney so no wonder you have good data.

Australia is a country bigger than the mainland USA with 25 million people so the cost and difficulty of supplying high speed data is totally different and includes fibre, mobile and satellite.

Bulk data bandwidth is sold to distributors who supply data at retail rates using the NBN network.

There are inevitable stuff ups along the way , but in my case I have had excellent service for 2 years, with the only delay I had for 2 days when the NBN was struck by lightning . Optus (the retail distributor) supplied me with a new modem in 2days and all was good again.
I was reading yesterday that there are numerous black spots in the UK,(and your bathroom) , so the problem is pretty general .

I get the size differences and challenges ;) Mind you though, it is not all good down here. The UK is hilly, my country is near as makes no difference: flat. So whereas the UK kan have dark spots with no reception at all, we have overlap at times. The again, we also have "less populated" area's around here which have virtually no reception and they only pulled in a fibre last week. I live in one of those area's.

Funny enough, my dad who lives in the middle of nowhere Sweden got his fibre connection years ago!

Sweden has lots of money from all the oil they sell, in order to use that money to subsidise EVs. and it seems lay lots of fibre.

Is that irony or hypocrisy?

Most countries use fibre now. Copper is SO outdated they are laughing at us for still using it. Fibre is cheap too, so it's not about cost.

So Disco Mick what do you do that needs more than 100Mbps?

I have 40 Mbps on copper and I can stream stuff flawlessly.

My daughter paid for 100Mbps at a fibre to the premisis in Wollongong and she got only about 40 as the ISP did not have enough bandwidth, so fibre vs copper is only one part of the problem.

Do you have 5 kids wanting to game simultaneously?

I can recall an article recently that it will soon be possible to have 200Mbps over copper.

Seems strange on a Land Rover forum where most members have the most outdated cars in existence.

It has always been about the cost. It's not the fibre it's the digging of the holes.

Five mobiles, often online

Our ADSL copes, but is slow sometimes.

Don't think that because you use copper the rest of the world is laughing. We have huge amounts of copper still in use and there are area's that won't even see fiber for the foreseeable future. The copper infrastructure is pretty much everywhere already, the distances to the copper POP's are usually small and high speeds can be attained over copper these days. Digging up large suburban area's just to pull a fiber cable that does not add much in that respect just isn't happening.

I do agree however that in a large country like oz you would use fiber a lot more than copper...
