    Funny how this goes

I was taught to preferably never use the handbrake! When those things get older the boots around the cable would inevitably wear and crack and water could get in. In winter the cables would freeze up over night and you had a car with the hand brake permanently on. Most people would not notice since handbrakes can be pretty weak and wear the brakes that way.

One thing I liked about automatic gearboxes even when I was a stick shifter fanatic back in the day was that they had a park which was not a gear but did prevent the car from moving. I'd love to see that in a manual...

    Cheers,
    -P

Had a Jeep which required the park brick to be used on all occasions as it would jump out of gear and release the hand break at random.

I knew a bloke who lived on a busy main road in Southern Brisbane on an off camber right hand bend. Several times he had a vehicle spin off the road or bounce off another vehicle and across his property. When someone arrived to recover the vehicle he refused access and said "Have you brought the cheque for the damage to my property? No? well bugger off and come back with it." This did cause some lively disputes.
