So lucky that little kid wasn't anywhere near it!

Looks like an “attacker” not a defender

I only ever use the handbrake...
One day I forgot to put it on and it roll slowly across the car park at work and kissed the bumper of another car.
Parking just in gear without the handbrake or wheels chocked is not a good idea either. Lucky it was a new diesel with a fuel shut off solenoid. Old trucks could roll in gear and then start and keep driving until they hit something and ran out of diesel. It is surprising how easily even a 10 ton truck fully laden with soldiers is to push start, only a few of us would jump out and push and the back wheels would only skid maybe 15cm before starting.

Oh, misinterpreted
Why not putting in gear?
Well I do engage when on decent slopes but general everyday I only use handbrake, never had a handbrake fail. I don’t think it’s a stupid approach.
Sadly my employer demanded and drummed into us that only handbrake be engaged and gearbox to be left is neutral, I was just a young tucker. It’s one of the few things I actually followed as normally I would challenge the system, process, procedure dunno how this slipped through and became the norm, hopefully the ACE was proud of me. Probably conformed because it was simple to follow and was one less time I’d be yelled at.......
I also nearly always reverse park when parking up, another must do by the employer, if I didn’t do this it would stand out like dogs balls and I would definitely be yelled at. Although reverse parking and leaving keys in the ignition is pretty much norm at mine sites.
I do apply the handbrake on my auto work car....I do this in the correct sequence which I rarely seen done which keeps the load off the pin.
Interesting.
It was always drummed into me to leave in gear, never trust the parking brake as often they didnt work (and one of my old cars didn't even have a functioning park brake Brick under the seat was the chock and park in gear. )
This thread reminds me of a funny story I heard from a couple of blokes I knew, they'd been sent up north on a job and got a hire car at the airport, when they got to the hotel the driver forgot to put the handbrake on, so it rolled out into the street and was hit by a semi-trailer truck. The sedan now looked like a hatchback, so they took it back to the airport and to try and avoid liability tried to tell them it had been damaged by person/s unknown in a carpark using a shopping trolley!
