Gumtree, there are some odd people out there

I'm sure I saw a thread some years back about some of the odd people on Gumtree.

I have a couple of Wanted adverts on there, a while back someone contacted me to tell me with the statement "you won't find one of those...." ?? As it happens I've found them but people are asking too much.

I've just been offered an overpriced Series Land Rover "fully restored, patina look" WTF ? I guess they painted over the dents ?

I have had a couple of people go out of their way to tell me that something I'm looking for was advertised on there but otherwise most of the sellers/buyers are odd, or maybe it's me that's odd ??

It’s not you mate, I’ve been clearing out the house of odds and ends over the last 12 months and some people just amaze me. I’m happy to haggle with anyone - buying or selling, I love it and expect it when selling second hand stuff but I’ve had more than one person offer me $5 for something I’ve got on for $100 or tell me they can buy it new for that and I’ll never shift it. I tell them to go buy a new one then and I’ve always sold what I’ve advertised close to what I started at.

There’s some good YouTube videos on ‘Choosing Beggars’ that remind me of some of these people.
If you need to contact me please email homestarrunnerau@gmail.com - thanks - Gav.

Yeah agree there certainly seem to be more odd people on gumtree but not exclusively. A few years ago we advertised my daughters Suzuki Jimny on eBay. We live in the lower blue mountains just out of sydney but this guy apparently in Perth was adamant that he wanted to buy and was stringing me along for a week or so that he was coming to have a look at it despite me repeating a number of times we were thousands of k’s from him. He never did.

We sold it to a young girl from the central coast and she loved it.

The Gumtree/eBay types that amuse me are the ones who list something at well more than it is worth or even achievable unless they can find a wood duck. They don't get a bid and the item is withdrawn. A period of time later it will reappear at the same price. One would think that if an item has been listed three times without attracting a bid the vendor would have learned from the experience.

When I was selling my MGBGT which I had receipts for over $35k for parts for the restoration , had it advertised for $25K , had people ringing up offering $1000 saying I should be happy with that. I find the 1st two days are the scammers, I will buy site unseen pay with PayPal & send a truck to pick up. If they cant arrange for someone to look at it , I am not interested in selling it to them. Had a guy from Sydney wanting to buy the MG site unseen told me he was too sick to fly to Brisbane to look at it so I told him if he was too sick to fly he was too sick to drive the car.

    Hello from Brisbane.

It might be vanity, but you may possibly have been thinking of a post from one of my old threads over in the SLOw chat section:

Give me a Home among the gum trees.... in

    Sundowner musing......

It was incomplete in hindsight because one of the loopies - Russell Smith from Woy Woy - that I got stuck with took about six months and twenty repeated messages (Monday morning hit resend) to finally get the money.

    I did get it though.

Incidentally, the mower catcher eventually went on the nature strip after foregoing the original generous $2 non-offer from Les and Irene.

While the iron is still hot - after I sold my XC70 a couple of years back I still had the unused luggage curtain in a cupboard. So, my wife put it on Gumtree as a giveaway item - yep, someone thought it was the wagon and asked that we deliver it to them....

    Cheers,

    Neil

SWMBO was looking at PlayStation 3 on Ebay, she did a buy it now for $x.
At the same time there was one on bid, it sold for twice the price SWMBO paid yet there were several at that Buy it Now price?

Sold a car on eBay. Buyer turned up to view and agreed a price. Wanted to collect in 2 weeks. Said OK if left a deposit in cash.

Rang day before pick up to say had family issue and needed to delay pick up for another week. When arrived had a friend with them who went over the car (nothing wrong with it) then said the price was too high. Was selling for what the dealer had offered as a trade in value. When I would not reduce price wanted the cash deposit back as was now not going ahead with sale.

Pointed out had given them a receipt that detailed car and price with deposit paid and the payment method required. It also had written beside the deposit that this was non refundable if the balance was not paid by the due date. Both of us had signed the invoice and initialed beside the non refundable note.

We were now a week beyond the due date so I was keeping the deposit. They could pay the balance and take the car. Left claiming I had ripped them off and they would have a solicitor call me. Of course never heard from them again

I bought my 2Dr sight unseen, just off the photos. The seller was really cool, he is in Vic I'm in NSW, the first time I saw it in the flesh was when the truck turned up to deliver it. Mind you it wasn't $25k!
