When is a restoration not one?

    Hi all

I have been wondering at what point a restoration is not one? What I mean, is there a point where there are more or predominantly more new parts than originals. We replace chassis and engines and everything else.
Is there is some legislation that mandates that there must be a certain percentage of original parts? I guess this would potentially be different from state to state.

Or if I was to build a series vehicle for arguments sake out of brand new parts how would I go about registering it? Would it be governed by current ADR’s? I suspect so, but then how does this differ from a restoration with a vast majority of new parts that would be compliant with say 1977 rules?

    Any ideas?
    Cheers

In NSW the vehicles identity is determined by the chassis number although there are circumstances where a chassis could be replaced and legitimately stamped with the original number. Using a Defender as an example you could have a vehicle with a rusted chassis that you ordered a replacement chassis for, fitted the chassis and replaced everything else and had a completely new vehicle where the only thing remaining was the chassis number.

It gets simpler with monocoque vehicles where replacing a shock tower with a chassis number stamped on it does not a new vehicle make.... Ask any Falcon GT enthusiast.

Reminds me of Grandpas axe. 70 years old, had 5 heads and 10 handles but still going stong.

Yep, the identity is the chassis or the chassis number.

Thanks both. Yeah I thought it would be the chassis, and I am in NSW.

So if I am understanding what you are saying essentially if I wanted to build a 'new' series vehicle (if money was no issue) I just need a chassis to start with and even if this is a crap one I could then potentially replace it so I would have a completely new vehicle?

The reason I ask is I read somewhere that Britpart (I know...) were looking at the viability of producing a CKD kit for a series III and was trying to understand how it would be possible to register here. I saw in one of their videos that their CEO had built a series III from parts..

An aside question...I have a series III and the chassis is completely rotten (see other posts here under Series III) and needs to be replaced. The vehicle hasn't been registered for many years. In this case I have a replacement lined up, can I just stamp the old chassis number onto the replacement? How can I find out if I am permitted to do this?

    Thanks Simon

You should be permitted to stamp a new, unused chassis that you can prove has been purchased as a replacement part. Stamping an existing one would be changing it's identity and the identity of the car so the easier path would be to assume the identity of the good chassis and use the old vehicle as donor parts (unless it has historical or sentimental significance ), in which case you are back to the new chassis option.

The above also presupposes that you can find someone in the RMS to agree to the process in writing before you buy the new chassis.

With regards to checking the status of the chassis that you have, sometimes joy can be found here Check a vehicle registration | Service NSW You used to be able to do a vehicle history search but that appears to be broken at the moment.

    In QLD you can almost do whatever you want. When I registered my 2a, They asked for the vin number, I said no such thing on this but I can give you a chassis number, after I gave it to them they asked if it was a;

    LWB
    station wagon.
    I said no.
    64 Landrover
    Diesel

They changed it on the data base and voila’

I have that app but unfortunately I don’t have a registration number for it and the guy I got it off inherited it with a farm he bought so not much history other than used as a beach fishing vehicle. I went into the local RMS office last year trying to track down a series 2A that I sold in 1984 (HUE619) but was told if it was not registered in 1991 when they computerized things there will be no record.

    Still looking for this one..
